Ahotel Confort Patagonia: Far from the madding crowd by Krystyna |

This aparthotel is situated right at the the very top end of Arinsal and has the Crest Hotel alongside it. There are some shops nearby and a restaurant but, really, this place is away from it all. There was a little supermarket but it decided not to bother to open any longer during my stay and then it was a long way down to the next one. It might seem nice when the chair lift is right there beside you but that's only ideal if you wish to go up the mountain! It's a two-seater, fast-moving chairlift and, if you have small children, it's hard to get them on.
Some fellow guests chose to go up the chairlift then walk along to the gondola station and then come down into the centre of Arinsal that way. This is only possible until about 4:30pm. If you are out and about in town after a day's skiing it's a long walk back to the hotel and it's uphill all the way!
The hotel was very pleasant inside but it backs onto a retaining wall so there is no view at the rear. This retaining wall is essential as there was a serious avalanche some time ago and some of the snow fell in this exact area (told this by locals). Some people in the know say they would not stay in the hotel or in that part of town because of the possibility of it happening again. A building project on the same side of the road but further downhill was abandoned because of the avalanche and the skeleton of the building stares at you eerily as you pass it. I didn't feel concerned during my stay but have chosen to be on the other side of the road or in town since that stay, to be on the safe side and to cut down on the walking. I haven't been there in the spring or summer months but I imagine it would be a very nice spot indeed. The walk down and uphill would be a simple one without the snowy conditions.
The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly and the facilities were well maintained. There is quite a nice, small fitness suite if the skiing is not enough for you or if you have a stay outside of the winter months.
Arinsal itself is compact and the locals extremely friendly. Most of the bars show DVD footage of ski groups' daily antics each evening to encourage skiers into a particular bar. If you're with a ski instructor he/she will tell you which bar your footage will be shown in. It's a system that works really well as none of the bars get crowded and your footage will be shown at regular intervals during your visit.
