| Alanya Travel Guide: alanya--something for everyone
| | Written by Marion Cross on 13 Sep 2007 about a trip in Jun 2006. Trip was for a group of friends on holiday. Marion Cross would definitely visit again.
| Alanya shopping | 7.0 | | the shopping in alanya is very good. there are many shops selling leather goods, clothes, jewellry and of course carpets which are hand weaved. there are many bargains to be found if you can barter with the shopkeeper. |
Alanya nightlife | 9.0 | | the main nightlife in alanya is set around the harbour area. during the peak season the harbour is buzzing until 3am. the main places to go here are bistro bellman, james dean and the other big bars that occupy the harbour area. these bars are frequented by both tourists and locals. the music is the usual clubbing type music plus some turkish pop. drinks here are more expensive than smaller bars but there is no entrance fee, which means you can go from one to another. outside of town there is the auditorium club which is great fun and open until 6am. a free bus runs from the harbour. for quieter evenings there are many smaller bars some providing entertainment. queens garden is a lot of fun, situated in the shopping area and the panderosa just off the main street, in the street leading down to the harbour. big bens which is on the east side of the town opposite the beach has karaoke, quizzes and sky sports showing english football. taffys restaurant also has quizzes bingo and karaoke. |
Alanya restaurants | 10.0 | turkish food is superb, and there are hundreds of restaurants providing good quality food all over alanya. one of the best is the ottoman house restaurant in the centrum, situated on the back road down to the harbour. tables set in gardens outside an old ottoman coaching inn. the food here is excellent, there is a fish night twice a week and the prices very reasonable. for very cheap food of the highest qualitythere is the sultan sofrasi. this is in the back streets on the eastside of alanya and probably best found in a taxi but be prepared to wait for a table as it is packed every night. the food is wonderful, cheap and the staff are great. there are chinese restaurants in alanya which are ok but quite pricey. english restaurants serving roasts, pies and english breakfasts with real bacon and sausages are taffys and crusoes. both of these resaurants are part owned by english people and cater for english tastes. taffy also do a wonderful indian curry menu. for the more adventurous turkish corba(soup)
is great. it is best to go to the soup restaurants after midnight where you will find many local eating. |
Alanya attractions | 8.0 | the town is overlooked by the castle ruins and is worth a trip up to see it. the views up there are fantastic. there is the remains of an early christian church and the frescos are still visible. it may be best to go early in the morning as the heat up there can be unbelievable and there is very little shade. there is a museum on the kleopatra beach side of town and although small has some very interesting artifacts, most of which have been found locally. for more historical sites a trip to side ( 1 hour away) is a good day out.
another trip is dim cay and the dim caves. most taxi drivers will take you there. this is a forested area with a river running through and can make a very nice lunch excursion as you can eat fresh trout from the river sitting in a pontoon in the river. the
caves are a little further up and have lots of amazing stalagmites and stalatites.
there is also a cave at damlatas beach(kleopatra beach) this cave is supposed to be very good for people with breathing problems.
there are 2 beaches in alanya, the east beach and kleopatra beach. of the 2 kleopatra beach is best. but the seabed slopes away very quickly here so is not suitable for very young children. the east beach is much more shallow |
Alanya events | | | every year in alanya there is a world championship triathlon event, held in the town and finishing in the harbour area. there are also various cycling events |
Alanya day trips | | | as previously mentioned, a trip up to the castle and to dim cay is worth a look. a day out to side is great if you like to see many roman ruins and an a roman theatre. locally a boat trip can be picked up in the harbour. these can be short 1 hour or half day trips or the best value for money are the all day boat trips which include lunch in the price. it is best to ask a few different ones for their price and get the best deal ( in other words barter) . the most wonderful trip is a trip to aspendos for a concert in the roman theatre. for around 30 pounds you get your coach, dinner and entrance fee. it is such a wonderful experience even if you are not a great fan of classical music. but dont book if the weather is not good as it could be cancelled or cut short. there are a lot of agencies that book trips in alanya and it is cheaper to use these than booking with the reps in the hotels. it is possible to barter for your trips. they do everything from white water rafting, jeep safaries to a 2 day trip to ephesus( which is fantastic if you like historical sites) |
Alanya History and Culture | | | alanya has been an important town in turkey for many hundreds of years and has been governed by the selcuks and the ottomans. nowadays it is a modern town that embraces tourism in the summer season (may-oct inc.) and returns to normality in the winter. |
Getting to Alanya | | | the best and easiest way to get there is to get a flight to antalya airport and get a bus or taxi into alanya. the journey from the airport will take around 1hr 30mins |
Getting around Alanya | | the main mode of transport in alanya is the dolmus bus, these will have a destination baord on the front and can be flagged down and boarded anywhere along the route and also alighted anywhere by calling to the driver. they do tend to get crowded but are very frequent and very cheap. alternatively there are plenty of taxis usually willing to take you anywhere for a reasonable price. |
When to visit Alanya | | the main season times in alanya are from the 1st week of may to the last week of october. the weather during this time is usually hot and sunny. it may be better to avoid july and august as the temperatures can reach well over 40degs and can be very humid and uncomfortable. early june and september are perfect |
