| Albufeira Review: What a surprise! (May and July 2004) | | Written by Rosemary Webber on 14 Jan 2005 about a trip in Jun 2004.
| I was learning golf so we decided to book a timeshare swap in Portugal last May. We're not the most organised of holidaymakers and tend to leave things until the last minute so the options were limited and, with some trepidation, we chose to go to a resort in Albufeira. We could not have been more surprised. We were staying at Praia da Oura but soon found the Old Town which became a firm favourite for eating out in the evening - so many great bars and restaurants, a great atmosphere, particularly around Fisherman's Wharf, and quaint streets and alleyways with the odd glimpse of the turquoise sea from bougainvillea covered terraces! Some restaurants had fantastic views all along the coast, and you could watch the twinkling lights of the sardine boats in the bay appearing as the daylight faded. Albufeira is so central that it is a brilliant base from which to explore the Algarve to the east and west (and in the hills behind Albufeira where there are some very pretty villages). There are not only the two excellent beaches in the town but along the coast we found many delightful coves, small and large, and long sandy beaches for surfing. We were so taken with the area that we went again in July, and our next trip is at the end of October - hoping for good weather!! Still haven't had time to play golf though!
Since then our daughter and son-in-law have been to Albufeira and loved it, and our son and his friends have tested the social scene with great success. Albufeira really is a destination for everyone! |
