Amsterdam attractions | | | Amsterdam’s most visited attractions are its excellent museums. Art lovers will adore the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum all situated close together in the museum quarter, while the cities lighter side is expressed in the Hash & Marijuana Museum and Sex Museum, both of which are located in the Red Light District. Anne Franks House, a short walk west of the city centre is popular with all visitors and well worth queuing for. |
Amsterdam History and Culture | | Perhaps no other city can lay better claim to the title “city of contrasts” than Amsterdam. Small enough to traverse in an afternoon, most of the city’s attractions can be seen in a few days and yet the large expat community pays testament to how hard it is to leave.
The famous red-light district at the heart of the old city is one of Amsterdam’s most recognised images. Prostitutes, lit by red light, sit behind full length windows and marijuana smoke wafts onto the street from cafes while groups of tourists come to party or take pictures in equal number.
Taking a walk outwards from the Centrum district along the city’s half belt of canals or one of the excellent canal boat trips is a wonderful way to discover the city’s distinctive architecture. Shaped by taxation policy, whereby tax was levied according to a buildings width, houses lining the 17th century canal ring are very thin, very tall and possess pulley systems so that bulky items and furniture can bypass narrow staircases. Yet this city of contrasts is such that modern structures grew organically between the old buildings and lovers of architecture delight in the city as much for its new works as its old. |
Getting around Amsterdam | | Amsterdam is a walking city. Central Station on the water front is but a five minute walk from Dam Square, the city’s heart and from there; The Museum District and Vondel Park, at the other end of the city are just two miles to the south east. There is a direct service leaving Central Station for Schipol Airport every 15 minutes and the journey takes 15-20 minutes. |
When to visit Amsterdam | | Amsterdam is at its warmest in July/August, but also at its most crowded. Weather in this city is never too severe, so Amsterdam can be considered a year round destination. Why not come during the cultural season (September – May) or when the tulips are in full bloom (April – May)? |
