Trip was for a group of friends on holiday. Karen Forshaw 1 would definitely visit again.

Antalya shopping |   8.0 | We arrived in Antalya centre (at the Dogu Garaje bus station) at about 2pm and had until 5pm to explore. After a few words of how to find our way back (this place is huge!) we set off to find the Ataturk Square.
Surrounding the bus station are markets stores in abundance! Selling things from fake sportswear, perfumes, bags, pottery, herbs and spices to animals! We didn't really go through them as the shops are what caught our eye (plus I'm not very confident with the haggling lark - which is a must)
There are again a wide variety of shops, most of which a standard town centre would house - clothes, bedding, homewares, sports shops, opticians, food emporiums etc etc.
There are some delightful old back streets in which we found some quirky little shops, so investigate them. |
Antalya attractions | 8.0 | Having only gone to Antalya purely for the shopping, I didn't really get to find out much about it. However, there is a large square near the Harbour which houses a large statue of Mustafa Ataturk (Father of all Turks), who is the man on every turkish lira note and coin - founded the country that is Turkey today.
Surrounding the harbour is a huge wall and is known as Hadrian's Gate. It has towers, the large tower facing the harbour and a few pieces of the harbour walls. One of the walls surrounds the yacht harbour and the other the city, almost like horseshoe. One of the remaining towers in the Castle Gate Square is now used as a clock tower. There are four gates in the city walls, which form entrances to the city.
The is also a museum which consists of 12 exhibition rooms and its gardens and open galleries. In these halls the history of Antalya is given in chronological order, starting with fossils, through the Stone and Bronze ages, then through the classical and Hellenistic periods. |
Antalya History and Culture | | We were actually staying in Belek, which is further up the coast than Antalya centre. However, we managed to book ourselves onto an organised trip which included the Antalya Waterfalls and a few hours in Antalya intself.
Leaving the Hotel at 9am we (having picked up a few others) arrived at the Waterfalls at about 10.15. They are absolutely stunning, and well worth a visit. It is apparently where the Timotei adverts were filmed a few years ago. We wandered through the caves and organised paths (not suitable for wheelchair users, although you could see the falls from the top without going down) and were there a total of about 1 hour, there are a few stalls outside the entrance which sold drinks/food/ice creams and also local wares, sunglasses, tacky toys etc.
We then set off through a maze of roads and farmland to stop off at our lunch destination, which was on the outskirts of Antalya itself - having grown a lot recently with new build towerblocks etc, we were in a fairly new section of Antalya.
The meal inclused a starter salad, a choice of either fish (head and tail on chaps!) or mixed kebab. I chose the latter and it was lovely. We had a dessert of some sliced fruit. The views from this place were absolutley stunning - a huge expanse of Mediterranean Sea and huge mountains in the background. |
Getting to Antalya | | | Antalya has its own airport, but can also be reached via every other possibal form of transport - it even has a tram system! |
When to visit Antalya | October to March is generally considered to be off season and you are not guaranteed the weather there. However we went March 14th to 21st and only had 1 evening of rain - so I was pleasantly surprised at that.
As an example - the outdoor swimming pools are generally closed for those months as it's too darned nippy to get in them then! |

does anyone know how far it is from antalya airport to the resort of bodrum? because im haveing to fly to antalya as bodrum airport is closed during the winter times! would be be very greatful if anyone could let know asap.
