Aqua Hotel Aquamarina: Just a number! by Martin Weld |
| Posted 29 September 2008 about a visit in September 2008 | Overall rating: 5.7 |
We were a mixed group consisting of a gay couple and the sister-in-law and neice of one of us, so our expectations were slightly different as was our various levels of satisfaction. Consequently, the ratings given are a sort of average.
Overall, we enjoyed our holiday, but not really thanks to the hotel.
The hotel is quite big and you get the feeling of being 'crammed in' - particularly around the pool area (where there is a neverending sea of sunloungers) and in the enormous restaurant ('ditto' re table and chairs). The restaurant seating system is a joke. You generally have to join a lengthy queue just to show your meal entitlement card (which they then check off day-by-day, meal-by-meal) and then wait at the front of the queue to be seated. However, you can avoid the queue (and having your card marked off!) by simply walking past everybody and saying that you're husband/brother/etc. is already inside! The system is a complete nonsense! On the plus side, there was usually adequate amounts of food in the help-yourself buffet-style restaurant and generally a good choice and variety of food to suit most tastes.
One thing that surprised me was that the hotel does not allow you to charge anything to your room. I have stayed in countles hotels throughout the world and this was the first occasion that I had encountered this.
We thought that the hotel staff were not particularly friendly or helpful (and, in fact, could be downright rude/offhand) which was a constant gripe throughout our week at the hotel. [Bizarrely, many of the hotel guests also seem to be miserable/unfriendly.]
The bedrooms were 'adequate' (perhaps too much furniture for such small rooms) but we had a recurring problem with the key card for one of our rooms, which, having discovered that it wouldn't open the door on any particular occasion would require a trip back down to Reception. This was all very well when the demand for the lifts was not not great but, at busy times was a complete pain.
One thing that did impress us all was the facilities for showering/changing on your last day, after you've checked out your room.
The resort of Santa Susana seems quite new and very well organised and we all enjoyed the location and the local (non-hotel) facilities - especially the markets, shops and restaurants. There are also cash machines conveniently appointed just outside of the hotel.
Personally, we (the two gay men) wouldn't return to the hotel (or possibly the resort) ever again. The sister-in-law and niece enjoyed the hotel more than we did and would return. We felt we were just an insignificant number in an ocean of people and that our patronage was not valued. When you're paying hard-earned money for service, it would be nice if that service was provided with a smile.

Aqua Hotel Aquamarina: Lovely hotel, shame about the resort! by Nige Burr |
| Posted 30 April 2008 about a visit in March 2008 | Overall rating: 8.7 |
The Aqua Marina hotle is one we honeymooned in 3 years ago, so we were looking forward to going again, this time with our new baby daughter.
The hotel and its facilities were really good, and the level of service from all the staff was superb. We really enjoyed our stay there. Tnhe restaurant was well run, and the food was plantifula nd very varied.
The room was fine, with a balcony and a view of the mediteranean one way and the mountains the other. The chamber maids were polite, well mannered and looked after the room to the highest degree. We were very impressed.
Sadly the resort of Santa Susanna has gone down hill since our last visit. The paving was uneven due to tree roots, the graffiti was across the paths a walls, and the general tidiness was below standard. We were very glad to have stayed in the hotel we did, as this made up for the disappointment of the area. Also we hired a car for the week, which enabled us to see some wonderful sites, cities and coastal views.
