Arenal: its alreet. (We went half board) by Danny Rowe |
| Posted 02 November 2005 about a visit in June 2005 | Overall rating: 6.5 |
Overview:
Not a bad hotel buy any means. little bit dated now but all the desk staff and bar staff are really nice and approachable.
The rooms are all pretty good with loads of wardrobe space and big bathrooms which are kept very clean. Showers always had hot water and the towels are changed regularly.
If you are going ask for a sea view room as they look out over san antonio bay and the sunsets are beautiful. the otherside of the hotel looks over the pool and inland. Take the sea veiew option.
Food:
Dont know what the the restaurant managers problem is though, he is a really grumpy old codger and looks like you've insulted him if you ask for a drink!!
The food in the restaurant is not up to much at all and after three days it all tastes the same if its fish chicken or beef (even the chips tated of garlic?).
The breakfasts are reasonable but avoid the baked beans as they are like pebbles in tomato sauce!! We ended up eating out on the last 4 nights as we couldnt stomach the evening meals any longer!!
Grounds:
The pools are ok and the terrace is lovely and the beach is only across the street right in front of the hotel, but thats the biggest problem. We paid for air conditioning in our room which didnt cool the room at all. All it seemed to do was put the ceiling fan on which then acted like a fan assisted oven!! Because this didnt work we had to sleep with the balcony doors open and this allowed all the noise fro the street into the room, and as you can imagine the crowds of people walking along the front at all hours arent exactly quiet!
Just along the street in front of the hotel are a couple of pre club bars such as Bar M and ithaca. These bars had the pre judgement sunday and pre Cream parties and are always lively, but a lot more expensive than other bars.
Probably wouldnt go back to the arenal myself, mainly because of the food being garbage and the noise in the early hours. I have however stayed in a lot worse for around the same price so all in all its not to bad really.

Arenal: Noisy by ShellyB |

We were a group of 4, aged 35, 34, 19 & 18. We wanted to be outside the town so that we could sleep but be able to walk to bars etc. If you went to bed at 6am (which we did couple of times) you could sleep OK but before that you had no chance.
We had a sea view, which was lovely but as it was so hot (it was July) we had the door open at night and were constantly woken up by rowdy people walking along the promenade.
The hotel itself was very nice and we had half board so ate breakfast most mornings and evening meal about 4 times during the week. Food was very good for a 3 star hotel but no comparison to some of the nice restaurants in the area.
I would still recommend this place for a holiday but unless you are going to be up until the early hours or going out of peak season, I strongly recommend hiring a fan/paying for air conditioning so that balcony door can be kept shut and you can get a bit of peace and quiet.
Probably wouldnt have been so bad if we did not have to get up for breakfast either. Apart from that, rooms very clean, good facilities and well situated for bars and town.

Arenal: Brilliant by Rhiannon Garvie |

We have just come back from Arenal, and I would recommend it for an ideal base for San An. It is far enough away that you are not really bothered by noise but close enough not to have to get a taxi home after a night out. The staff were all really friendly, and our room was cleaned every day. It wasn't exactly the most modern hotel I have stayed in, but it had a nice "authentic" feel about it and it was much nicer than some places you could end up staying in!
