Athena Beach: lovely, spacious hotel by Theresa Jackson 1 |
| Posted 12 November 2006 about a visit in September 2006 | Overall rating: 9.7 |
Arrived at the Athena Hotel Reception and we were greeted by very friendly staff, we were relieved to find they all spoke very good English. The porter showed us our room which was very spacious and clean. The bathroom was equipped with a very good shower. Looking out over the pool from a very ample balcony with table and chairs we were delighted to have a beautiful sea view to wake up to. The hotel also provided a bowl of fresh fruit and a bottle of brandy each to welcome your arrival. Tea and coffee were provided in the room, we requested extra milk and cream and it was brought without hesitation. The tea may not be your personal favourite so take some if you can.
The next day we went down to breakfast and were delighted at the choice, the variety would suit everyone, hot, cold, fresh fruit, breads, juice etc. The staff are constantly cleaning, most were training in hotel management and were very keen to expand their knowledge of the English language. There was no sense of urgency and we enjoyed the dining experience very much. We were booked for bed and breakfast so cannot comment on evening meals etc.
The hotel has plenty to offer if you decide you want to do more than sunbathe, we found there were no problems finding sunbeds, all with pads and brollies, for the fit and wanabees there was certainly plenty going on or quiet areas or if you needed it. We were also pleased to find towels were provided for beach and pool.
The beach is literally yards away, with access being sandy, it was fabulous, there are areas where the seaweed is abundant but the local people will tell you it is an advantage and they cover themselves in it to absorb the properties it can give, most of the English seemed a little reluctant and would rather indulge in the more luxurious treatments that are available in the hotel treatment rooms. There is also a sauna, beauty and hairdressing salon. A fully equipped gym for those times when you may have overdone the sunbathing and need a little respite from the sun.
The walk along from the hotel is very pleasant as you can walk along the side of the sea promenade style and check out the fact that you have chosen the best hotel!! as we English are prone to do. It takes about forty minutes to walk to the beginning of Paphos but I would highly recommend it. There you can find Starbucks Coffee Shop, a brand new supermarket, Marks and Spencer , Debenhams, Morgan, Next, but just a tip not on Saturdays after 1.00 or Sunday. There is a local market on Wednesday and Saturday until 1.00 pm. Or just sit in the Harbour and people watch as we English are prone to do too!! The best restaurants are by the way not in the Harbour but up in the town itself, for a change try Cleos, a Chinese we would recommend.
One of the advantages of staying at The Athena is a very good local bus service which is literally outside the hotel, numbers 11 and 15 which run every 10-15 minutes, you need the number 11 to go the Market. It is a very cheap way of getting around. If you want to go further afield ask about the Mini bus to Limassol which you share with other people and costs around £5 each and runs every half hour. There you will find the bigger shops, one called Woolworths Department Store, not Woolworths as we know it but nevertheless well stocked and worth a visit.
If you need to use a public telephone make sure you buy a card for the public phone box similar to ours and not for the private ones which have a kind of hood style box and are more expensive.
Duty free in Paphos airport is worth checking out especially if you use Lancome cosmetics, its cheaper than at home.
Have fifteen Cyprus Pounds ready to pay for your taxi transfer from the airport, some people paid up to twenty as they were not informed early enough.
We would definitely go back to this hotel again, indeed we spoke to people holidaying who were not able to get in and were staying at other hotels along the coast who had nothing but praise for The Athena.

Athena Beach: Athena Beach by Nicos |

We visited in late April 2002. Lovely hotel, good service and very clean. Evening entertainment was a little bit naff so we went out to the nearby bars. Roadworks were a pain but I assume they will be completed soon. Lovely big bedroom (pay extra for the sea view it is definitely worth it). Food was a little disappointing - looked as though it was better the earlier you got to the restaurant.
Would go again
