Bali: Very basic by Mike Ward 4 |
| Posted 28 November 2006 about a visit in November 2006 | Overall rating: 6.1 |
Benalmadena is not Spain - it is like a UK seaside resort with sunshine. There are Brits everywhere and I hardly spoke to a Spaniard my 2 weeks. Most of the bars & restaurants seem to be run by Brits and most were empty which made them feel uninviting. The exceptions being The Corner Bar on the sea front and Mojos in the square behind. The resort at this time of year is very quiet, at 7:30 one evening on the prom I was the only person around.
The Bali Hotel is a well run, relatively clean hotel with friendly staff at a budget price. It has a nice pool area. But even at this budget level there are things that drastically need improving…
1) Security - The hotel is up a hill on a small road off the main drag. I was robbed on the steps of the hotel just after midnight. The hotel really does require a security guard. I assumed from the attitude of the staff that I wasn’t the first person that this had happened to. Until they sort it - take a taxi and run inside if you come back late.
2) The Rooms - The beds seemed like ex-military issue; steel framed with the thinnest mattress including springs poking through. I expected a basic room at the price I paid but these beds really do need throwing away. Also the room was very, very small with a small TV the only ‘luxury’. The walls needed a wash down. The self catering apartments seemed much newer and bigger.
3) Food - the food was plentiful but oh so bland. I know not everyone likes spices and herbs but at least one dish could contain some flavour. The food was like British food was in the 1970s.
Would I go back - no.

Bali: Bali Review by Yvonne Russell |
| Posted 31 October 2005 about a visit in August 2005 | Overall rating: 8.8 |
Went to the Bali for 1 week in September, in a party of 6 adults and 4 children. We all had a great time. The food was excellent and there were no compaints there from any of the party. The swimming pools were good as was the bar service. We didn't encounter any unruly children but the behaviour of some of the adults staying there left a lot to be desired! The rooms are basic and a major downside for us was the paper thin walls. We were woken up on three nights by three different couples agruing in nearbly rooms. At one point we had to call security to the couple next door who had been screaming and swearing at each other for over half an hour. Our children could hear every word. Security arrived within a minute and quietened them down.
The evening entertainment in the hotel is poor. We tended to take the kids to the mini disco then head up the hill to Bonanza square for a few drinks. There are some great Spanish restaurants up in the Arroya del Meil area but most of the bars in Benalmadena itself seemed to be Engish, which do not appeal to me when abroad! The beach is fabulous. The hotel is up a steep hill from the main road but it wasn't as bad as we expected.
All in all a good hotel and I would not hesitate to return.

Bali: Kids rule the roost! by Anthony Pettigrew |
| Posted 09 October 2005 about a visit in August 2005 | Overall rating: 6.3 |
Just come back from 2 weeks at the Bali. If you have well behaved kids dont go here! Most of the families seemed to let the kids do exactly what they wanted when they wanted, running around all through the entertainment and right past midnight. I know they are on holiday but there has to be some consideration for others.
The best thing about this hotel was the food of course the only ones complaining were the kids as they dont know what real food is, if it doesnt come as a happy meal they are not interested. The hotel chef obviously knows we dont all want chips every night and there was lots of different styled potatoes with each meal, very good indeed.
The rooms are very basic and in need of redecorating we were moved on our first night as the slats on the beds were broken and hanging by tape! Also only one power point in room and if you hire a fridge thats where they plug it in, fridges were full sized but some very old and broken. We found the reps ok, didnt spot them in the local bars like another reviewer!
The trips are more expensive though and can be purchased cheaper locally. Euro travellers cheques were a waste of time as you had to pay 2 - 3 % each time you cashed them which was not the case with stirling travellers cheques. The area itself was quite nice as long as you enjoy a nice walk, local buses are very cheap indeed only 1 euro to Torremolinos and 1 euro 15 to Mijas a lovely whitewashed village in the mountains. Selwo safari park and Marina well worth visits and the cable cars at the bottom of Tivoli world very good too. Biggest pain was the touts on the streets, they really drive you mad with their constant corny chats!!

Bali: Bali Studios by Sam Townsend 1 |

Stayed for two weeks in April 2004. Found the apartment walls to be rather thin and could hear pretty much everything going on in the apartments around us. The apartment was only cleaned 3 times in the two weeks we were there, which we found a bit off, and did bring this up a couple of times with the Thomson reps. Nicely located, although up a rather steep hill!! Can't comment on food etc in hotel as did not spend any money there, it's cheaper outside! For the price we paid (£65 each for two weeks inc. flights) it was an ok place to stay.

Bali: Hotel Bali by Liam Alberts |

I visited the hotel bali in august 1998 and 1999 i thought that the accommodation was great and the pools where great. The hotel is located on top of a steep hill so not suitable for elderly people. Was in Bali in 2003 and thought it had changed alot. The staff were the same but you couldnt have as much fun having said that it was full of kids not many people up for alot of fun. Staff were helpful and friendly especially the Med Playa entertainment team. they seemed to have a laugh all the time. The food was the same quite good. The only disadvantage to this hotel is it situation as it is on a hill. But other than that iut was mint. The nightlife in Benalmdena it self is absolutely great you have 24 hour square just further along and you can party all nite

Got back from the bali apartments on 28/08/03, what can i say, brilliant ,superb etc............yes all of those.
Two pools with lifeguards, two toddler pools, constant entertainment, not too expensive drinks, all in all we had a great time.Have already booked to go back next year!!! One major tip,DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CASH OR TRAVELLERS CHEQUES AT THE HOTEL, THEY RIP YOU OFF WITH THEIR EXCHANGE RATES. i.e they were offering 1.30e to the pound when you could get 1.36e 20 yards down the road. Apart from that magnifique!!!!!
As for the hill, you will only have problems if you are over 90 with cardiac problems.

Basic but very clean. Have to climb a hill whichever way you go (either going or coming back) but only a short distance down to beach. Entertainment poor. Happy hour only 3 times a week and only for an hour. Sunbeds either broken or covered in pidgeon **** and not much shade or umbrellas. Poolside bar shut at 1.30pm, just when you fancy a drink. On the positive side, the food is excellent - tasty and plenty of choice. You can hire a safe in your room (I think you can hire a fan and a fridge too). Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice sea view from south side complex. Could be different in season (we stayed in April). All in all not bad for a two star hotel.
