Balmes: A great Chill out zone! by Grayflo |
| Posted 24 January 2006 about a visit in September 2005 | Overall rating: 9.6 |
I went to the Balmes Hotel because I heard it was a great place to be quite . My travelling companion and I just needed a good rest. We certainly got what we were looking for...and more!!
This building is away from the busy, newer area of town. There are no discos nearby, or fast food places, to cause any disruption. If you ask for a room overlooking the pool, there is very little traffic noise, either.
The food was lovely. Plain but generous and tasty. Full fried breakfast if you fancy it or continental style. Lunches and dinners were tasty and plentiful.
Sure, the building needed a lick of paint here and there, but it was charming. I especially liked the cool, shady terraced garden, but sun-lovers have the pool to sit round.
The staff could not do enough to help us. They seemed really keen that we had a good time and were very helpful and kind. There is a nice playgrpound for the children, and enetertainment each evening. Best of all, we got a great night's sleep every night as after midnight everything quietens down.
Nearby are all the shops you might need - pharmacy, supermarkets and veggie shops for the self-caterers, newsagents, etc. And it is a nice stroll to the main shopping area which stays open in the evening.
Throughout the year there are interesting events on in the town - exhibitions and festivals. Plenty to interest a traveller.
If you want peace and quiet, coupled with old-fashioned service then the Balmes is for you. We'll definitely be going back.

| The Balmes hotel gave us all that we wanted in our holiday.
Our main requirement was tranquillity and rest, and after a previous holiday in another Calella hotel, which gave us two weeks of nightly noise and drunken abuse, we were relieved to be back at the Balmes.
This was our third visit to the hotel and it has never disappointed us. We only went elsewhere because the holiday company pulled out of the Balmes. But this year we travelled independently and the holiday was a dream!
The Balmes is located at the residential end of Calella, which suited us fine, as we are not “party people” or clubbers. (Having said that, if you do enjoy a lively night out, there is plenty to entertain you at the other end of town, which can be reached by a "street train" or by walking.)
After 12 midnight, any inordinate noise in the hotel is dealt with by the night staff and a peaceful night of sleep is guaranteed
During the day the Balmes has something for everyone. There is an attractive pool area, with both sunshine and shade, and a charming garden terrace with atmospheric trees and shrubs, where you can sit with a snack or a drink, read, or simple chill out. There are pool tables and a lovely little children’s play ground.
The restaurant is clean, the food has something for most tastes, and, though simple, it is well cooked, tasty and plentiful. Buffet service meant we were never hungry and were able to take our time.
There is no rush and in the air-conditioned and spacious dining room we found mealtimes very pleasant and relaxing.
There are two lifts and several ramps at the Balmes, and as Calella is mostly flat, even the less mobile holiday-maker will manage well.
The rooms are equipped with both ceiling fans and air conditioning (unlike some hotels, this was at no extra cost!).
There is a hairdryer, telephone and TV as standard. The telly has mostly Spanish and Catalan programmes, but there is also BBC World News channel in English, plus a useful channel which relays CCTV images of the pool area to your room - handy if you want to keep an eye on the kids!
What struck me most about the Balmes was the way that all the staff are committed to excellence. Everyone is very helpful. They have a great commitment to give you a good holiday. Without exception we found them smiling and hard-working. Nothing was too much trouble.
Whether it is the reception staff, the gardener, the cleaning ladies, the restaurant staff or the maintenance man - everyone does a good job.
One service which we did not use, but which was a comfort, was the messenger service. If you leave your family the web page address, if they should need to contact you, they can click the message button and e-mail the hotel, who will pass on the message.
The Balmes has not been refurbished recently, but everywhere was clean and everything worked. Best of all, if there should happen to be a problem, it is sorted out as quickly and efficiently as possible. The management are very approachable and reception staff speak excellent English.
We felt very safe and well-looked after. This holiday was everything we could have wished for. In fact, we have booked for next year!!!
