Bangkok Review: Frenetic, bustling, but wonderful!

Written by Helen Jones 3 on 07 Apr 2005 about a trip in Jun 2004.

We stayed for 4 nights, which was probably about right! The city is the busiest, noisiest place I think I've ever been to, but it has a wonderful atmosphere.

We took a couple of excursions with our tour company - one to the Grand Palace and Temple and one to the Floating Market. To be honest, the Floating Market trip was a real tourist trap - we stopped at so many "local craft centres" along the journey and the market itself is full of tourists and tourist tat. It was still enjoyable though, but be prepared to be hassled.

There are a lot of hawkers in the tourist areas, but they aren't overly aggressive, although they will try to rip you off! If you do want to buy, haggle - they expect it. You'll probably still pay too much, but it's so cheap compared to the UK that it's not that big a deal!

We took a day exploring by ourselves, rather than on excursions, and we're glad we did. The river ferries are incredibly cheap, and are a good way to get to some of the temples - we visited Wat Arun, which is very interesting. The skytrain is also cheap, and very clean and efficient.

Bangkok is incredibly vibrant, and the Thai people are so polite and friendly. We really enjoyed our time there and would love to go back.
