Beekman Tower: Comfortable Hotel and easy to get to sights by Joanne Blakemore |
| Posted 16 October 2008 about a visit in November 2006 | Overall rating: 8.0 |
Me and my boyfriend travelled here for my 21st birthday in November. New York is an amazing city and I would recommend it to everyone! We stayed at the Beekman Tower which is not very central but great as a base. The rooms were very spacious and had a separate living area, bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom was a bit on the small side but there was only the 2 of us so we were fine. The bedroom was big enough with a big bed and a TV showing loads of channels, great for the night time after a hard days shopping and sightseeing!
The hotel is located on 1st Avenue which is basically on the edge of the city and close to the river. It is not far from the UN buildings. It is quite a walk to 5th Avenue which was were we tended to start our days. Grab a bagel and decide what to do and see for the day. I am not a big walker but found New York fine to get around, we walked to and from 5th Avenue everyday and also to Times Square and most of the sights. The only time we got a taxi was when we got a bit lost and needed to get back to the hotel and down to Ground Zero and Battery Park for the ferry. Everywhere else we walked to it!
There is plenty to do in New York and there are things you should definately do and see when you are there. Definately go up the Empire State Building, amazing views of the city from up there and some great little souveniers.
We also took a ferry trip which took in the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, excellent trip to get to see the sights. There is also another couple of different trips that allow you to get off at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty but my boyfriend had already done that a few years ago so we decided to do the other as we got to see more.
The Brooklyn Bridge is amazing and if you can I would definately walk across it as there are plenty of photo opportunities on the way and the bridge itself it amazing!
Fifth Avenue is also another must visit! The shops on there are great even if you dont buy anything! I would say definately go in Tiffanys just for a look and if you can afford to buy something then DO! We also went to FAO Schwartz the toy shop and Toys R Us which is full of little suprises aswell as all the toys there are sweets and the replica Empire State and Statue of Liberty made out of Lego! Brilliant!
Times Sqaure is ace! So much to do and see there. The TRL show studio is also located on Times Square so watch out for celebrities there! The Hard Rock Cafe on Times Square is also great and we had lunch in there twice. With it being the States you get massive portions so be warned when you are ordering!
Central Park is beautiful and you must go and have a walk around, a peaceful break from all the shopping. We went in November and it was snowing!! With it being winter there was also the outdoor ice rink in Central Park and there was one at the Rockafella Centre.
Of a night time we tended to stay at the hotel or go somewhere for some dinner and go back to the hotel. All the shopping and sightseeing is tiring so we were in bed early almost every night. The amount of walking is also mad, i lived in my trainers and walked almost everywhere. There was a nice restaurant at the top of the hotel which you need to make reservations at but we had no problem for the night we wanted. The only thing I did find about the restaurant is that they said no casual wear jeans and trainers etc which we would not have done anyway but when we got up there we found a lot of Americans in jeans and trainers so felt slightly over dressed. The food was not to my taste up there but the cocktails were excellent! So many to try and very strong!
Macy's and Bloomingdales are a must see too! Basically you will never be short of anything to do in New York!
