| Benalmadena Review: Watch out for sewage when swimming in the sea. | | Written by Steve Putman on 04 Jan 2006 about a trip in May 2002.
| The Sunny Beach hotel was basic, no food or bar, just a place to kip and swim, but clean, and centrally located with a good view of the sea.
The slatted bed proved too insubstantial for me, as did the couch, both of which gave way underneath me, but I am 15½ stone.
The pool was a fair size but in need of repainting - the bottom was patchy in colour due to old paint fading/discolouration, but clean.
There is a very pleasant park and also a much bigger hotel with large swimming pool/bar/food just up the hill only a few yards away.
On the seafront there are loads of really good fish and meat restaurants. The squid was out of this world, yummy.
Watch out for sewage when swimming in the sea - just to the west and only a few hundred yards up the coast road towards Fuengirola, we saw a large and disgusting swirl of brown water topped with a brown foam, near the nudist beach!!! Stay in your pool.
There are lots of things to see and do such as Aqua parks (2), 'african' safari park, Crocodilos park ( a must if you have always wanted to hold an 18" baby crocodile in your hands) best reached and cheap by train, not bus or taxi. Bars and pool tables a plenty, karioke, clubs etc are all there.
A couple of hours down the coast is Gibraltar but you are best advised to hire a car - it's easy to find your way there & back. Watch out for queues and delays getting into and out of the Rock, due to the Spanish tactics of making life difficult for the Gibraltarians & their visitors. Take plenty of water.
You can take a 2-3 hour boat ride to see the dolphins in the bay, which was brilliant. Don't try looking through the viewfinder of your camera, just set it to automatic and point and shoot, as they are so quick when leaping out of the water. |
