| Benidorm Review: I have been visiting Benidorm since 1973. | | Written by John Morrison on 22 Dec 2005 about a trip in Sep 2004.
| I have been visiting Benidorm since 1973 and I can remember when the beach front had a fair number of villas which have been replaced over the years by apartment blocks. I have stayed in a number of hotels and apartments over the past 30 years and I consider myself lucky that I have only been disappointed by 1 apartment accommodation. I have often heard Benidorm being classed as another Blackpool which may be some peoples perception of the resort, personally I think of it as a home from home. I am always amazed at the number of holiday makers who travel to destinations in mainland Spain and its islands just so they can sit in an English bar having full British breakfasts and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and paying over the odds for the privilege.
My advice is try seeing the real Spain, step inside some of the Spanish restaurants and bars try your hand at a few Spanish words believe me you wont be laughed at, the Spanish are warm people and they will respect and encourage your efforts.
With regards sights seeing I would recommend you research the tourist information available for Benidorm for believe me you can travel just as easy by local bus, taxi's, and train to practically every venue that is offered by the tour operators at a much cheaper rate. Car hire is reasonably priced and if you’re going to venture up or down the coast to the likes of Denia Altea Calpe make sure you get unlimited mileage as part of the car hire package and don’t be frightened to point out any bumps scratches or damage before you sign on the dotted line for the hire and please remember your required to have your passport and drivers license when driving.
With regards money exchange rates please be careful for I have seen a number of people having their fingers burnt over the years there are a number of places where you can change money and get the full amount one being the English lady who has a money exchange in the covered in market situated in the Ricon area of Benidorm. The dodgy money exchanges to look out for are easy to spot as they will display a higher exchange rate for the Euro than the banks and genuine exchanges my advice is to look at the board which is normally on a wall behind the cashier and you will see various exchange denominations for the Euro and if you look carefully you may find that you have to change a large sum of pounds sterling to get the rate shown on their board.
If you are self catering take the time to walk around on your arrival and visit the supermarkets as the smaller ones can tend to be dearer than the larger supermarkets and believe me this extra amount Can soon add up over a two week holiday. The local market is on a Wednesday and Sunday and you can still get the odd bargain but be prepared to haggle as its part of the fun. The market has a vegetable area where you can stock up on fruit and veggies but remember when picking tomatoes etc select some under-ripe as well as ripe so they last you a few days.
Restaurants prices are very reasonable in Benidorm and you may find its just as cheap to eat out rather than buy and cook your own food when walking around check out some of the hotels as some allow non guests to take advantage of their daily menu and you can get a three course meal eating as much as you want for the equivalent of £4
TRANSPORT LINKS
For those taking flight only it is now possible to travel by bus from the airport and the cost of a one way journey is 6euros.The bus leaves from outside the arrivals terminal at the same time as the Alicante bus you cant get confused as it has Benidorm clearly displayed. At present it leaves four times a day these times being 10-30am 2-30pm 5-30pm and 9-30pm the journey takes approximately 50 minutes and at this present time only makes one stop in Benidorm that being the Avenida Europa. On the return journey it picks up from the Avendina Europa at 08-00am 12-00 noon 4-00pm and 8- 00pm dropping off outside departures at the airport. The next project in the modernisation of the transport system is to provide a rail link to service the passengers currently travelling via the low cost airlines now serving Alicante.
I hope this information is of use to any new visitors to Benidorm – enjoy your holiday |
