Firstly, no-one spoke even the basic English. We thought our Spanish was very basic but we managed to communicate with the staff better than they communicated with us.
No-one in the surrounding area spoke English - not even the staff at the railway station. We are pretty gregarious and if we cannot speak the correct words, which we can usually conjure up, we can get by with sign language, drawings etc. We were so surprised that an hotel/village only 9 minutes by train from Santander was so cut off from Europe.
We had a reasonable stay but have to say that someone with less ability may have struggled.
Our opinion that it is probably paying a bit more for an hotel in the centre of Santander where you might be able to communicate more easily, unless your Spanish is fluent!
