Bristol: Mixed Opinion on Bristol by Sonia Martin |
| Posted 16 October 2006 about a visit in August 2006 | Overall rating: 5.7 |
We booked the Bristol Hotel for a one week break in August with a travel agent in Ireland. We knew they had no sea view rooms available but as the reviews of the hotel were so good we said we would settle for the cliff view room instead.
On arrival we were allocated Room No 702 - please please do not take this room if it is offered to you. It is firstly the smallest hotel room I have ever seen, it has little or no natural light as there are shutters on the patio door which lead out to the cliff. You can touch the cliff so it is not so much that you have a view, it is that you are in the cliff!. But the main problem is the smell, the room was musty and stale and there was a definite smell of sewerage in it. The air conditioning is so noisy that when you put it on it is like the jet engines of a plane taking off. We refused to stay in the room but as the hotel was fully booked we had no alternative but to stay there for the first night. They found us a seaview room the next day (with no balcony) which was again small but extremely clean and a fantastic view of the bay (Room 102).
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly throught out the mess and did their utmost to sort our our problem but it was an extremely busy time of the year as all the Italians are on holidays so I would recommend avoiding Sorrento during theses weeks in August (11th - 25th)
The hotel is in a very good location with only a short walk down to the town.
The food served for breakfast and dinner was excellent and the staff are so friendly and easy to talk to. The view from the restaurant is brilliant and makes you relax after a long day signtseeing
The gym is tiny and if you are booking this hotel because they have one (as we did) you will be disappointed - there is one treadmill and one bike and not much else so be prepared.
The pool is very clean but I think charging €1.50 per towel is not right, it should be provided free to guests. The pool attendant was very strict with towels that people left out on beds but did not use them and would remove them after half an hour. First time I have seen that happen.
I can see why this hotel gets such good reviews from it's guests as all the staff were brilliant, food was very good and general facilities were as expected. We were just unlucky with our room on arrival but they did all they could to fix it for us. I would hesitate to say this is a 4 star hotel as advertised, but if you get a seaview room with a balcony then I think it would be a very good hotel to stay in.
