Trip was for a couple on short break. Vera Murphy would definitely visit again.

Budapest shopping |   5.0 | | Unless you have a lot of money, stay away from the shopping malls, great style and fantastic shops, but you'll pay much more for any item of clothing than you would in Ireland or the U.K |
Budapest nightlife | 9.0 | On our first night out we made the mistake of going by the guide book. We visited Beckets Irish Bar, and it was full of lads from a Stag weekend. They were very noisy and shouting rather than singing. When it became clear they were not moving we did. We went to The Cat Club which is a cellar bar and great music. Lovely cocktails! On our last night as we were staying in Buda we found a local pub in the Mammoth shopping mall called Jam Pub. Great atmosphere, great food and brilliant live music with everything from rock to jazz.
We never saw any kind of illegal activity anywhere, but definately get the bar staff anywhere you are to call a cab, there are lots of illegal taxi cabs everywhere and, do, overcharge. |
Budapest restaurants | | | We found the best thing to do was to look at the menu before you go in. Nearly all of the cafe's, restaurants and bars had bi-lingual menus. The only bad experience we had was a restaurant our hotel recommended. The food was great but they were about to heavily over-charge us until we totted-up the bill ourselves. The seafood is great, especially in the old town (Buda), and try the goulash soup for lunch. Breads are heavenly everywhere, as is the famous salami. If you have never tried salami before or don't like it as I didn't, try it here, its heavenly. Most of the pubs also do great food. |
Budapest attractions | 10.0 | | We visited everything we could and still didn't have enough time to do what we wanted. Lots to see everywhere. You havn't been to Budapest if you don't go to The Castle District. Also near here is the National gallery which is lovely. Saint Stephens Church is awsome as is all the other churches. You'll find all the buildings beautifully preserved. Definately pay a visit to one of the baths, and give yourself most of a day here as you'll be so relaxed afterwards you won't want to do anything else. |
Budapest History and Culture | | My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Budapest city in March and loved it. We stayed in Buda, and that I don't regret as its the perfect location for sight-seeing and in relatively quiet location compared to Pest. In saying that, it had a good varitey of fantastic pubs and restaurants.
The castle district was so much more than I had anticipated and the guide books could definately do it more justice. If your 'into' old, well preserved buildings, beautiful unblemished views, romantic walks, browsing through old shops, then this should be your Spring or Autumn break next year, I couldn't praise it enough. You have a full view of the whole city, with the danube infront of it, and all for free. In general, I thought the city is very well preserved considering its history, and very clean. The buildings are so nice and sometimes it felt like I was after stepping back in time as some streets don't seem to have changed at all over the years.
People are generally friendly, except for maybe older people, who seem to be set in their ways. |
Getting around Budapest | | Definately use the public transport in Budapest. One word of advice though, if you are only going for maybe 2 days, or plan on staying in a certain area for most of your trip, don't bother with the travel tickets which enable you to use all modes of public transport at all times for a limited amount of days (about 25 euro for 2 days) We didn't buy them, and used the underground, and cabs mostly. Check where you will be visiting before you buy one. Also, don't flag down taxi's in the street, ask the hotel, bar, reataurant etc to ring one. |
When to visit Budapest | | We went in Spring time, weather was lovely, no queues anywhere and very safe, I would presume Autumn would be the same. |
