| Cairo Review: F-I-R-E-I-N-C-A-I-R-O | | Written by Monk-San on 14 May 2005 about a trip in Oct 1993.
| The title is a refernce to an obscure track by The Cure that I've always loved.
Cairo itself is fiery hot and we visited it on a short trip whilst staying on a fortnight's holiday in Luxor.
Making time for Cairo, whether at one end of a cruise, on a city break or hopping up from elsewhere in Egypt. is well worth your while. As a modern city, Cairo is cram packed, with every road having at least one more lane's worth of traffic than actually painted on the tarmac. The Cairo museum is a must - if you've gone to the trouble of picking Egypt you are presumably interested in their rich history, and here you will find it in abundance. Statue after statue, artefact after artefact, treasure after treasure and an entire floor given over to the opulent contents of Tutankhamen's tomb.
With your back to the city, you can look out into the desert, and meet the impenetrable gaze of the sphinx. if you've seen "The Spy Who Loved Me" (and who hasn't?) the spendid Son et Lumiere (sound and light) show has the added pleasure of the sheer familiarity of some of the words .... "..I am he, the Pharoah..." (cue Jaws biting into that short bloke). |
