Calan Blanes: Our holiday at Cala N Blanes by Jan Hayes
Posted 06 August 2003

View of beach from sun balcony of hotel

Hotel Cala N Blanes - 'Sun Balcony' - steps lead up to bar

We returned from 1 week all inclusive break on Friday 1st August 2003. Flight from Gatwick with Air2000. Booked 2 weeks prior to departure. We travelled without our children ('too old' according to them). Overall we had a great one week break.

Our flight was from North Terminal at Gatwick (far less fun than South Terminal) and the walk to the gate felt like MILES away. We discovered later that this is because BA have the monopoly on the short distance gates. However, the flight to Mahon was okay apart from the AWFUL in-flight meal which we paid extra for. Once arrived at Mahon - very quick through airport.

Transfer time to hotel was 45 minutes. Resort was very small but short distance to local supermarket and 10 minute stroll from Los Delfines. Hotel seemed clean and tidy on first appearances.

There was a bit of a queue and wait to get checked in. We were eventually allocated room 117 (first floor) although we did specify (unpromised) that we would prefer a room on a higher floor as we felt that not having our children with us this would prove to be quieter. We found that we were in the smallest corner room of the whole floor - without a balcony but with a side-on beach view. The double doors opened inwards with a small railing. We were immediately over the kitchen / restaurant and overlooked the childrens games area. However, the room was air-conditioned and with the doors shut they cut out a LOT of noise. Unfortunately the room PONGED! We tried keeping the door to the bathroom shut and all the plug-holes covered to no avail. We eventually complained to the hotel reception who responded VERY quickly by changing the air conditioning filters in ALL rooms. Unfortunately this only worked for about 2 days but was not bad enough to spoil our holiday as we did not spend too much time in the room. Being in the corner of 2 corridors we did experience a bit of noise from other guests but not enough to REALLY bother us.

Unfortunately as we arrived we were told by other holiday makers that there had been an outbreak of some kind of stomach upset and some holiday makers had been hospitalised. According to what we had been told the hotel swimming pool had been drained and cleaned. A letter from First Choice was later issued to all rooms explaining that an independent test had shown that the bug did not originate from the pool and advised holiday makers to take extra care with hygiene. We were lucky and had no problems.

We found that the selection of food was very good indeed for all sittings and catered for all tastes. We have come back a lot heavier than when we arrived! Our ONLY complaint here was that the restaurant staff were FAR too keen to clear away your plate and unless you left some kind of personal belonging on the table, cleared your setting like locusts if you left it for more than 30 seconds to get something else to eat! On more than one occasion we had to retrieve our unfinished drinks from their trolley and witnessed this happening to other guests. (I personally think that this was due to the head waiter who seemed to be continually ordering the female members of staff about)

The bar was well stocked and drinks were plentiful and very generous measures given (apart from water, which was always given in smaller glasses). The bar staff were very friendly and entertaining. Being all-inclusive definitely speeds things up - although we noticed that small children who could not be seen over the bar were quite often overlooked when needing soft drinks. The hotel entertainment team were very friendly and believe you me - our room being over the games area - were extremely patient with some of the kids who whilst away from mum and dad - pushed them to the limit!!

We stayed for the first half of the welcome meeting (given by Tracey the First Choice rep - who DID NOT need a microphone) it went on and on and... anyway we did not want to use more of our holiday than necessary listening to it all. The evening entertainment was good, varied, and family orientated although they were experiencing a bit of a problem with the volume as a nearby resident was complaining about the noise. Because of the heat they couldn't shut the doors as a lot of people wanted to sit outside to watch what was going on. As a result the only dancing going on was the kids party dances.

The hotel had a pleasant sun balcony with sunbeds, which we used more than the beach - basically because this was nearer the hotel amenities. There were a couple of other bars around the beach which had their own entertainment - although I would say that if you were as close as we were to one of them you will NEVER EVER want to hear another song by Enya for the rest of your natural! (we were sorely tempted to buy them another CD to use). When we did use the beach - having been forwarned about the hire charges for sunbeds / parasols - took our own parasol and bought cheap li-los from the local shop. There was a tree shaded area towards the back of the beach.

The day we left (our flight was later in the day) we were able to use a 'hospitality' room for 30 mins (free of charge) to freshen up.

My only other comment would be that we have had BETTER reps than First Choice. Although we try not to judge all of them as being the same - our return transfer rep (female) overall left us with the impression that she viewed holidaymakers as the enemy and practical jokes were her way of 'getting us back'. Watch out for the wisecrack about the 6-hour delayed flight which she thought was REALLY funny - remarking to her colleague - 'did you see their faces'. She thought nothing of keeping her 'private' conversations for private times and we overheard her make a remark about her superior (bearing in mind there were children on the coach) 'what does the old tart want now' - not the worst we've heard, but doesn't really leave a good impression about First Choice.

All in all we had a very enjoyable week in this small resort. Food was fantastic. Drinks plentiful. Hotel staff friendly. My account is my OWN viewpoint and I have tried to give an overall picture. We definitely would go ALL INCLUSIVE again and would possibly return to this hotel - shame it's with First Choice though.
