Calan Bosch: Modernised? by Tony Mcfarlane |
| Posted 28 May 2006 about a visit in May 2006 | Overall rating: 8.6 |
When I booked this holiday last year, I made sure that I had read the reviews first. Almost all of them said the same things and most were qualified by "However, this is one of the oldest hotels in the area". One of the reviewers had mentioned that it was to be re-furbished in the closed season, a fact that I had confirmed by Airtours and, a week before I went, by the travel agent. If it has been re-furbished I dread to think what it looked like beofrehand! Notwithstanding the condition of the rooms, which to be honest are of an acceptable albeit old standard, the hotel is good value for money. People who arrive expecting 4 star standards should book 4 star accommodation and not book 3 star and spend their holiday complaining about the comparison!!
The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, particularly so if you take the time to learn a bit of their language so that they are not made to feel inferior because their limited English isn't quite as good as your complete lack of Spanish.
The entertainment staff work hard to ensure that guests, both old and young are entertained with a variety of games during the course of the day as well as the evening shows which, to be honest, could be better.
The bar closes at midnight, whereafter (and this is my biggest gripe about the hotel) the security guard sets about brow beating you into finishing your drinks and going to bed. Whilst understanding that this is a family hotel, there should be provision for adults to enjoy a drink beyond midnight, particularly if they don't have children with them.
The food is quite varied and plentiful, with buffet style for every meal. There was more than one occassion were some of the items were either warm or cold but, again, there was a microwave oven near the hotplate. Not ideal I know but at least they had made that provision. I have been to hotels where it has been cold, end of story!
The cleanliness of the hotel can't be faulted. The rooms are cleaned daily, as is the rest of the hotel.
There is a kiddies playground and a separate pool and the kids are well catered for overall.
The location of the hotel is superb, right on the beach and there is no fighting for sunbeds of a morning, regardless of nationality. In fact, the hotel forbids the reserving of beds by guests so don't bother nipping down in the dead of night with your towels because if they are there and you are not, they will remove them.
All in all, this is a value for money location and although not without minor faults, is what it is.
Like I said, if you want 4 star pay for 4 star.

Calan Bosch: Reasonal value for money by Paul Baars |
| Posted 07 October 2005 about a visit in August 2005 | Overall rating: 7.8 |
It's the second year that my wife and I have been there. It's one of the farthest resorts from the airport, so if your'e the last drop off, it can take nearly two hours to get there.
The hotel's pool is next to the beach so we just like to sit by the pool, read, relax and occasionally wander down to the beach for a dip in the sea. This year, the beach was spoilt by a large deposit of seaweed washed up after a storm. The poolside bar is great, when it is manned.
Also nearby is the marina, which is great for a wander around in the evenings, after dinner. Plenty of restaurants/bars there if you are not all inclusive. Cala'n Bosch Hotel is mainly all inclusion and the food has greatly improved since last year. The restaurant can get very busy at times so you just need to avoid those times.
The entertainment is not great but is average for Spain. In otherwords I've seen worst but then again I have seen a lot better.
The rooms are adequate and could do with being updated but do have great views of the sea and the marina. They have saterlite TV, that's OK if you are into Spanish TV programmes.
Overall impression: Reasonal value for money.

Calan Bosch: Hotel Cala'n Bosch, Menorca by Karen Vernon |

We have stayed here three times now, only for a week at a time which I think is probably long enough. Twice just my husband, me and our 2 young kids but we have also taken my parents and they really enjoyed it too. The hotel is one of the oldest in the resort but being the first there, has the best location. Yes, it may be quite dated but is very clean and well maintained. The rooms are adequate and are cleaned daily with both towels and bedding changed every couple of days. They are very small when fully occupied, wardrobe/cupboard space is very limited and there is no where to put your empty suitcases other than outside on the balcony. However, if you are like us, the room is only used to get washed, changed and to sleep in so not too much of a problem. Again, the bathrooms are basic but clean, probably due to be updated soon.
There is loads for the kids to do and the hotel is situated right next to a great child friendly beach. There is a lovely shallow pool set against the lawned gardens to one side of the hotel which is fantastic if you have small children and a larger, busier pool with a small seperate childrens pool on the other side of the hotel better for older kids with lots going on. The nightly entertainment in the hotel is 'typical'. The restaurant is extremely well managed, with hot fresh food being brought out regularly. We have stayed at numerous all -inclusive hotel throughout the world and I would rate the food here as good as anywhere, infact the choice probably much better than average. The wine in the restaurant is very palatable and available on tap which is great especially considering it's free.
The only other down side to this hotel is their 2 very small lifts which can't cope with the volume of traffic at busy times.
The hotel is also only a two minute walk from the centre of Cala'n Bosch. All the restaurants surround the marina, (wear mossy repellent when down at the marina at night if you are suseptable to bites). There is a great selection and lots of street entertainment, hair braiding, artists etc. The Goody Goody Park next to the marina is also great of you have children - bouncy castle type things, trampolines, go-karts, crazy golf, amusements and a lagoon style pool with a couple of small slides. Nice to sit and have a drink whilst the kids play in a fairly well contained space for a couple of euros. The waterpark is worth a visit for the day- again suitable for the island - good for children, nothing too scary or suitable for adrenaline junkies! There is a go-karting track outside here too.
All in all this is a great value for money family hotel in an excellent location in a superb, child friendly, resort. It might be annoying for the elderly or childless travellers as the hotel does get quite noisy and boisterous at times, especially during school holiday times, but if you've got kids of your own then so what - you want them to have a great time too don't you?

Calan Bosch: Fantastic !! by Mikey-A |
| Posted 10 February 2005 about a visit in June 2004 | Overall rating: 8.5 |
This holiday was one of my best yet! We went in a family of 7, and it was our first All Inclusive holiday. The hotel itself was fantastic. Due mainly to the entertainment on offer. The holiday reps were great with the children and adults and always did their best to get everyone involved. There were activities organised daily, and at night if there was no entertainment acts on, they did it themselves (We all found these alot better than the professional acts) Poolside fun and games were never a miss and got everyone, from all countries involved. The food on offer was great, some people had complained about there not being enough selection, but there was always something different on offer. something for everyone! Staff in the hotel were great, and did try to help however they could, we had a night flight and they had even prepared some food for our arrival in the early hours. The only let down for me was the location, but as it was a family resort I couldn't really complain. The nightlife was almost non existent, but if any young people do want a night out, I recomend the Big Apple (its a bit of a walk but great once you get there) Most nights we opted to stay in the hotel as we had alot more fun, and being all inclusive the drinks were free!!
All in all it was a great holiday and I would have no problems returning again!!
