Caleta: Good Hotel, Excellent Location by john9159 |

This holiday was booked through Cresta in November 2003.
I stayed at the Caleta (4 star) on a 4 night trip to Gibraltar. The Caleta is a nice hotel where you can have either a Rock view room or for a bit extra, a view of the Meditteranean Sea as I had. The room had clean carpets, a telephone, decent furniture, a balcony, television, electric kettle with cups, coffe, tea and milk thrown in, althought the lead for the kettle was too short so had it on the floor. All rooms have a bathroom with shower facility. It was an old style hotel and very quiet with solid walls so you do not hear any sounds from adjacent rooms. Breakfast is pretty good with a wide choice on offer; croissant, cake, toast, cereals, tea, coffee, fruit juice, Danish pastry etc etc.
It is located on the Catalan Bay with a small beach, in fact the only beach on the penninsula of any significance. There is very little on this side of Gibraltar which makes it so quiet and peaceful for those who prefer to be away from the centre.
The hotel restaurant, Nuno's, is expensive at about 22GBP per head but on the beach a short distance rom the hotel is the Sea Wave, lots to eat and worth a visit. It is accessible via some steps next to the hotel which lead directly to the beach.
The hotel has a gift shop selling various oddments including small pieces of limestone from the Rock for about 5GBP; you can get these free on the beach!
Walking from the Caleta there are a few shabby sights such as builders yards and what looks like a graveyard for abandoned cars. This really spoils Gibraltar as more could be done to clean up the coastal areas.
I travelled alone and made the most of the trip by going on an arranged tour of Gibraltar with Bland Tours which shows the Upper Rock, a tour of the inside of the Rock, the Mosque and varoius other locations around Gib. I also went to Tangier with Bland but was disappointed as we were taken to a herbalist and carpet sellers and harassed awfully to buy there wretched products.
Gibraltar is a funny place best described as being made up of the old buildings of England crammed on one small penninsula. It's ok for curiosity value and for elderly people who want a no-nonsense holiday where you can speak English and use English currency. A very sleepy place with not much to offer the tourist.
If you are in Spain then nip across by car for a day. Good hotels are expensive as is eating out.
Tax free shopping is a bonus but be wary of buying more expensive items such as digital cameras as you can't go back to replace it if it goes wrong! Cigarettes are very cheap at less than £9.00 for 200 but remember that you can officially only bring back 200 but should be ok with 1000 as long as you don't attract any attention.
Not much trouble with robbery, in fact there is so little goes on that the news reports actually list each "crime" individually.
