My partner Fiona and I returned to Castell Playa again this year. We were accompanied by my son and his girlfriend for a one week stay. Once again it was an enjoyable experience. The hotel continues to provide a good standard of accomodation and the all inclusive drinks option is definitely worth considering. We had one bad day of weather but the rest of the week was warm and sunny, approximately 30 celsius. Good walks along the coast to Son Parc, Na Macaret, Addaia and Punta Grossa.

We spent a day in Mahon where my son and I enjoyed the harbour tour in the glass bottomed boat. This was good value at 8.5 Euros for a one hour trip. The women kept the Nao and Ladro makers in business for the forseeable future.

Menorca is an unpretentious sort of place where you can still get a good quality holiday without breaking the bank. Castell Playa is a good base from which to explore the island, the food was as good as last year and the entertainment had Variety with a couple of very good comedians. All in all a good holiday destination.

View from a first floor bedroom - no need for a high floor here!

Castell Playa "King of the Hill"

A great Thomson GOLD hotel. Just spent a week here and it was excellent. Very peaceful, relaxing holiday. Had a standard room with seaview. If you like morning sun then pick a seaview room, if you like sun on your balcony in the afternoon / evening then go for a room with a poolview on the back of the hotel. Be aware though rooms on the back will also overlook the outside entertainments stage - great if you fancy watching the entertainment from your balcony - not so good if you fancy a quiet early night. This last week ( end of May ) entertainments in the evening were all held inside in the upstairs bar / entertainment area rather than outside anyway.
Resort was really quiet in the evening - come 11.30pm when the outside entertainment at the other large hotel in Arenal finished it was almost silent. Relatively good sound insulation in the rooms meant not a lot was heard from within the hotel, beds were very comfortable so some excellent nights sleep. Our standard room was directly over the restaurant which initially worried us - needlessly it turns out as we didn't hear a thing from it.

Food was good quality. The cold buffet though lacked much variety over the week. Each night a speciality table was changed. Favourite night was "puddings" night, least favourite was "sliced cold sausages" night! In between was seafood, cheese, and fruit nights that I remember. Hot buffet always delicious.

Pool area felt a little cramped when filled though terraces do extend up a couple of levels with more sunbathing space. I was amazed when getting up early on the last day to get flight home to find towels already out on the best sunbeds before 7am - and with only Brits in the hotel the Germans couldn't be blamed for it!

Hotel is "King of the Hill" in Arenal so the walk down to the beach is all sloping roads or steps. Roads though were almost empty, and the steps went past the shops so walk was pleasant enough and didn't feel a chore.

Arenal may be relatively small and quiet but it's not lacking for any necessities. There may only be one road in and out - but that means no through traffic so very peaceful. There are atleast 5 supermarkets easily walked to in Arenal. Cafe's and bars serving food atleast twenty or more, plus various other shops and giftshops dotted about.

Area is great for walking. It's a pleasure to be able to walk to either of the neighbouring bays via clifftop paths. The Thomson Gold Local Interest Rep will take you on these walks, but they are easy enough to find for yourself.

Loved Menorca, loved Arenal D'en Castell. From the moment we arrived at Mahon airport everyone was very helpful and friendly. A very relaxed holiday.

My wife & I took our first ever holiday without the kids here in August 2000. It was, by far, the best holiday that we have ever had. It is now the benchmark by which we assess the quality of our summer breaks!
The Hotel was first class - we had a room overlooking the pool but far enough away that we were secluded. The afternoon siestas were spent on our balcony as naked as nature intended without the possibility of offending anyone.
The mornings, when we did not go to the beach or sightseeing, were spent round the pool with some of the most convivial people one could want to meet.
The food was excellent, the waiter service first class - and amusing at times, and the evening entertainment pitched at just the right level for discerning adults!
We even found watching from our balcony on an evening was a pleasant affair.
ThomsonGold holidays are now our first port of call every year. This year we are traveling with Thomson to hammamet. I hope our experience is as good as it is our first holiday alone since 2000
The bay is the BEST, SAFEST and cleanest that I have known and I spend most of my time in the water, skuba and snorkelling.
