Castell del Mar: Castell Del Mar by James Ballantyne |
| Posted 01 August 2005 about a visit in July 2005 | Overall rating: 7.5 |
Just returned from a week’s holiday 12/07/05 in the Hotel Castell Del Mar in Cala Millor, Majorca, and although this hotel has 4 stars it is NOT a 4 star hotel and do not expect it to be of British, French or Italian 4 star standard. Major concern was safety, with a number of the automatic closing fire doors wedged open, not a practice that would be tolerated in the UK.
The hotel which appears to be primarly for the German holidaymaker was pleasant enough but it appears to be very much prone to overbooking, during our stay a large number of guests were not allocated the type of room they had booked. In some cases they had no room available and were asked to move to another hotel, this will stop me from ever booking this hotel again as the last thing you want after a long travel is to find no accommodation. When hotel management were asked for an explanation the only answer given was that there was no room available, so be warned.
Found most of the dinning room staff extremely helpful and friendly, some on the other hand were of the non-smiling type and any request for assistance such as asking for a chair was met with the reply “that is not my job”. It must be said nonetheless that the dining room manager and head waiter were excellent and went out of their way to help when requests to their waiting staff was ignored
The accommodation was comfortable and clean; the hotel room was cleaned every day, and the bed linen change twice in seven days. Towels were changed on request. A television was in the room but the only English channel was the news with all other film and entertainment channels in German with some Spanish.
The restaurant served buffet food; the evening meal was of a very high standard, perhaps the best I have experienced in any buffet restaurant, the breakfast food was of a similar high standard as was the snack bar and it is pity they are spoiled by such poor waiter service.
The pool area was well set out but as usual not enough sun beds were available and the problem of towels being placed on beds from very early in the morning and lying empty most of the day was evident, why hotels can not organise a system I have seen used, whereby a bed with a towel lying empty has a sticker placed on it with the time written on it, if it is still empty a half an hour later the towels are removed and placed on a pool side table to be collected by their owners. Although daytime entertainment was advertised there was little evidence of this and the evening entertainment was not of a particularly high standard.
If the Hotel Castell Del Mar could sort out the problem with over booking, give staff training in what is expected of them, give more consideration to British holidaymakers and allocate a proper star rating it would go a long way to improving standards.
