| Central Park Review: New York, New York | | Written by Monk-San on 13 Jan 2005 about a trip in Oct 2003.
| Of all the places that I've been to, NY NY is the closest I've had to a disappointment. When you go to the "city that never sleeps" you don't expect to find the bar closing (in the NY Hilton) before 1am! That never happens when we travel in Europe... There are many sights to see though, and so much of it is recognisable from the many films and channel 4 programmes that we see (ah, the up-side of US cultural imperialism). Times Sqaure is smaller than you might expect - in fact, even calling it a square seems a bit of an overstatement. Central Park though is splendid - and huge.
The most unexpected treat was Ellis Island, which is a fascinating museum to US immigration - it's much worthwhile to spend your time here rather than on Liberty Island next door. Take the ferry, admire the Statue without getting off the boat (you'll sit there for about 10 minutes) and go straight on to Ellis for a few hours exploring.
Another treat is the Central station - what stunning architecture - and so beautifully decorated! |
