City and Islington shopping | | | Although the City’s first department store recently opened its doors, this is not shopping as we know it. Here you will find some of London’s oldest markets, on Sundays the famous Petticoat Lane and Brick Lane are heaving with shoppers seeking bargains from clothes to electrical goods, while neighbouring Columbia Road is a treat for the senses with its flower market providing a riot of colour and scents. Open every day Spitalfields is a market unlike any other – its collection of independent shops and stalls provide an amazing range of arts & crafts, fashion, antiques and interiors, combined with an international food village. |
City and Islington nightlife | | | Islington is home to many fringe theatres and also to the new Sadlers Wells & Lilian Bayliss Theatres while the Screen on the Green cinema offers a programme of contemporary films to complement the latest releases at the mainstream multiplexes. The Barbican is home to a concert hall, two theatres, three cinemas and a range of bars and restaurants. When the City starts to close, Islington starts to party! Whether its trendy Hoxton Square or the ever popular Upper Street bars and clubs to suit all tastes combine with live music venues to ensure Islington’s reputation as one of London’s most exciting places to go. |
City and Islington restaurants | | | Stretching from Angel to Highbury, Islington’s Upper Street is famous for its incredible range of restaurants providing you with a choice of cuisines from around the world. Here there are gastro-pubs, modern English restaurants, cafés and brasseries ensuring the there is something to suit every budget. In the heart of the City, the stunning Royal Exchange is also a must-visit having been recently re-developed; here you will find champagne bars, a Grand Café and also fine dining restaurants alongside luxury goods shops. |
City and Islington attractions | | | The world famous attractions of the Tower of London housing the Crown Jewels, Tower Bridge with its high-level walkways and the stunning St Paul’s Cathedral are all here, alongside some of the less well known such as the Monument, or the Bank of England Museum. Walking is the best way to see the sights and discover the hidden gems of London such as the old Leadenhall Market or St Katherines Dock by the Tower. City and Islington History and Culture | | The City of London or Square Mile as it is sometimes referred to, is situated on the Thames between Tower Bridge and Chancery Lane and bordered by the Borough of Camden to the North. During the 20th Century the City became almost exclusively the Financial & Legal heart of London, with a very small resident population. Recent years however have seen significant changes with new hotels and stores opening in the area, although it can still be very quiet at weekends when some of the stores, bars and restaurants are closed.
Islington is a trendy suburb located next to the City between Hackney and Camden. The area boasts some of the finest Georgian Squares in London, Richmond Place being the most recently famous as the home of Tony Blair prior to his moving to Downing Street. At the heart of Islington is Angel, once a Staging Post, but now probably most famous from the game of Monopoly. |
