| Copenhagen Review: Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen.... | | Written by Monk-San on 05 Apr 2005 about a trip in May 2004.
| Copenhagen really is a wonderful place, but it's also a bit cha-ching, so have your wallet fully primed before you go. Its a nice place to walk around - Stroget is aparently the longest pedestrianised shopping street in the world. And I like a shopping challenge! Food does tend to be a bit "steak and chips", but there are good restaurants, with excellent menus, if you but look for them.
Sadly, you have to use Danish krona, since the Danes haven't joined the euro yet, which for a Europe-hopper like me is very annoying (even if the UK is no better....).
The Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue) is really famous, but there is actually an awful lot of sculpture in Copenhagen, so if you enjoy that kind of thing, you'll enjoy what you can see here. I really enjoyed Gefion (I think) - a Goddess driving her four sons before her (which she's turned into oxen).
The area around St Alban's church is lovely - really tranquil and a pleasant stop on the way to/from the harbour / mermaid.
Tivoli gardens is a lot more theme park than gardens - a place to take children, so I wish I'd given it a wide berth.
Nightlife was enjoyable, despite the expensive alcohol and there are some great bars. |
