Corbeta: Pass marks for Corbeta by Tony Adams 6 |
| Posted 24 January 2003 | Overall rating: 7.0 |
My wife and I were at the Corbeta Aparthotel the first week in January (2003). It was the cheapest accommodation available in the package holiday, so we went there not expecting the five-star treatment.
Bottom line is that the Corbeta might have been an imposing place when it was built 12 or so years ago, but I doubt if a penny has been spent on it since.
The bungalows are small. We opted for one with a kitchen, even though we were half board, and were grateful for the extra space it provided. The apartments are clean and tidy, at least, although the squashed mosquitoes on all the walls bear testimony to the problems you'll experience at night.
We had unwelcome visitors every evening, but had bought a good mossie killer in a spray can in a local supermnarket, and one "skoosh" did the trick every time. The apartments are maintained six days a week by chalet maids, so you could not fault the Corbeta on that score. The pay TV irked a bit, especially as the only English language channels were Sky Sports, none of which you could watch due to the bad reception.
Best thing about the Corbeta? Easy to answer...the food!
No wonder the place is so popular with chunky Germans. Buffet breakfast has everything on display, from melon slices to sausages, and you can eat until you drop. Some did!
Ditto dinner, also buffet style and with a tremendous selection. Compliments to the chefs. If eating decent food is high on your wish list for a good holiday, you won't be disappointed by the Corbeta.
An option at dinner is to try the pizza/pasta restaurant adjoining the main dining room. A buffet starter here is followed by, yes, pizza or pasta...all cooked before your very eyes by the chef, and very, very palatable.
Entertainment is aimed at the German guests, which is fair enough as 80% of the guests, I'd estimate, come for that country. The lounge area is huge, and service comes with a smile at all times. I lost my wallet there one night (I guess it must have fallen out of a shallow trouser pocket) and when I trudged back up there from my apartment expecting the worst, was met by the waiter who found it, who cheerfully handed it back and refused my reward for so doing.
The pool area at Corbeta is also huge, and there are masses of sunbeds, with not a towel in sight to reserve them early in the day. Explain that away anyone!
To sum up. Corbeta. Great food, attentive staff. Top marks...BUT the accommodation is well past its use-by date.
The way we looked at is was that we were only in the apartments to sleep anyway, so any shortcomings might be forgiven as far as general decor went. You pays your money...
Best restaurant we found outside Playa Blanca and a must-visit for any gourmet...Lani's in Puerto de Calero. If you plan to eat out only one good lunch over the holiday, get yourself down to Lani's (the restaurant that is, not the nearby grill also owned by them).
Hope this helps...
