Dusit Laguna: Stunning by Mike Ward 4 |
| Posted 01 March 2004 | Overall rating: 10.0 |
Let’s cut to the chase, this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and rightly justifies its place. I have stayed in a number of these hotels but the Dusit is a cut above, even in this illustrious company. The Dusit Laguna is one of 4 hotels in the Laguna complex on the North West coast of Phuket. You can move from hotel to hotel by boat across the lagoons and eat at any of the restaurants on the complex. I had a quick look round the other hotels and I felt the Dusit was the nicest. The closest was the Banyan Tree Resort, but that is considerably more expensive. The Sheraton looked in need of a lick of paint and had no atmosphere even though it rated one more star than the Dusit – but the hotel that could have been anywhere. The other hotel was the Dusit Beach Village (I think) but I never visited it.
The Dusit Laguna is a hotel where customer service is king – I could not fault any of the staff in any way whatsoever. They where attentive at all times, without being ‘in your face’. I have never seen so many smiles. No suites and ties here, just tropical elegance and happy people.
The hotel building is exactly what a Thai hotel should look like and it had tons of atmosphere and character. There are 3 restaurants on site – and Italian, a Western/Thai mix and a pure Thai, all of which were reasonably priced and faultless quality and service. The only gripe is that wine is expensive at £15 ($27) minimum a bottle.
I had a regular room which was reasonable size and nicely furnished, a really comfy bed, aircon and with a lagoon view and a balcony. There were bigger sea front rooms available at a premium, but I felt my room was more than adequate and spotlessly clean, with maid service twice a day.
The pool area has a café with great snacks and a Jacuzzi as well as a large pool. There were plenty of sun beds and attentive staff to ensure you never lifted a finger – even making up your sun bed for you. The whole pool area is at the front of the hotel separated from the beach by a grassy area also used for sun bathing. All sheltered from the direct sun by palm trees. The grassy area adjoins the white sand beach which is clean and proved a lovely view over the Andaman sea. There are a few stalls selling beachwear here plus the occasional hawker, but they never stray into the hotel grounds and are always polite.
Outside the hotel, it is a short 3 minute taxi ride to some local shops, bars and restaurants again all of which were of a very good standard. However, this is not a lively resort – it is made for relaxing. If you want lots of night life and shops this is not the place – stay in Patong for that. Having said that Patong is a mere 15 mins taxi ride and at a very reasonable cost.
So in sum I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough for its sheer quality feel and atmosphere.
