El Mouradi: Hotel Melia El Mouradi by Coolhandluke |
| Posted 27 September 2004 about a visit in August 2004 | Overall rating: 9.0 |
My wife Margaret and I arrived in Tunisia on a red eye flight from Belfast in the early hours of Sunday 12th. This was our 1st visit to Tunisia so were slightly apprehensive as all 1st time tourists are to a new holiday environment. Our hotel the Melia El Mouradi in Mahdia was our destination along with 40 or more other souls. After boarding our coach and settling down for the hour or so journey over bumpy dippy roads with traffic calming ramps every mile or so. Our travel rep. a chap called Slim who poked fun at his name due to his large frame informed us that not all rooms were available and 20 names were to be called out. The called would be put up in the nearby 4* Melia beach hotel, well, paranoia overcame the called and as we ourselves were called, joined in. After much and many explanations and arguements were pursued the 20 called were enticed into the Melia Beach hotel and signed in at 0540 hrs on the promise we would be transported to The Melia El Mouradi at 10.00hrs. At 1030hrs all the called were sitting in little groups around the foyer waiting for something to happen. So,this is where our holiday really began,we were taken over to the Mouradi and met by a very worried and soon to be haranged Panorama rep. Tony the in house Rep. for Panorama spoke to us at 12.30hrs after the the 11 o clock meeting for the rest of the new arrivals from which we did not participate, most likely due the fact we might be a bit loud. Anyhow Tony said the hotel was at fault and we were upgraded to full board, also Panorama through Tony offered us a free trip, normal cost £17.50. I move on to the hotel now. The Melia El Mouradi is a 5 star hotel and perhaps some may say 4 star, I really enjoyed the Mouradi's facilities of which there is many. The room was large and very clean with every amenity one should need. The food delicious and varied, also an a la carte restaurtant with a floor show at time. The hotel staff were excellent, friendly, and helpful.(No I don't own shares in this hotel!).Seriously I rate this hotel as well worth a visit, right beside the beach also. An improvement could be made in the intertainment department especially on the beautiful outdoor terrace cabaret.lots of bars and a large disco, although not enough young people there to use it. We took a trip called A Tale Of Two Worlds. The 1st world you visit is the Roman at the fabulous colliseum of El Djem where Russell Crowe strutted about in that little short number. Not true although we were told that, the colliseum used in The Gladiator was Ait Ben Haddou in Morocco.Great photos to be had for only 1 Dinar. We were only allowed less than 1 hour there which was maddening. The other world was about the Muslim world, although interesting it is a bit too long, beware, you will be asked to pay a Dinar here and a Dinar there for photos and long gowns, these must be worn for all who wear shorts, skirts etc. No photos allowed of inside the mosque, when we visited the Blue Mosque in Istanbul it was no problem! The trip ends in a carpet sales premises, but there is no real pressure put on one to buy. Oh, almost forgot you will be served lunch in a very busy resaurant (Turkish) enjoy :-) All in all we had a super holiday,Mahdia is a quiet resort and this hotel does really try,so full marks. Oh, we found the drinks especially the cocktails to have very little alcohol in them.Tony the Panorama Rep. is a laid back kind of person and very approachable and helpful, bit of an old swinger, well, why not. So,thats my story,if you do go and find that I may have helped even a little, please let me know cos I'm sad that way ha ha . Cheers all.
