Explorers: Disney succes by Alan Mcloughlin |
| Posted 13 April 2006 about a visit in March 2006 | Overall rating: 9.0 |
We visited the Explorers Hotel with 4 Grandchildren aged 5,6,8 and 10 and it was agreat success.
We had the 6 Crew Room and it was really good for us. The cleanliness was excellent throughout the hotel.
The Menu meals on offer were quite good value and the kids liked them.
The Swimming pool facility was first class and well used by ourselves. The soft play area was enjoyed by the kids, gave us time for a drink at the bar.Drinks were expensive especially the soft drinks.
Location was good and the frequent free buses onto the resort were good, although at times a bit crowded.

Explorers: Good place to rest by kelza |

When we arrived after a long journey i didn't find the booking in very good. The man that was dealing with us couldn't find our names then we had only been booked down for 1 night when we had actually booked for 2.
The swimming pool was good and the cleanlenes was good. You had to have a shower before entering the pool.
There is a ball pit and a little play area for the kids which amused them. There is a pirate ship, one side featuring a slide for the swiming pool, with a the wall down the middle and the other side a play bit. Also there is alittle arcade that keeps teenagers amused.
While we were there we had a false fire alarm but this showed us that if this fire was a real there system works very well and it was easy to get to a fire exit.
The food was o.k for what we wanted. Most of the time we were eating out while in disneyland it's self.

Explorers: Good Value - Shame about the food by Raybeeze |
| Posted 08 January 2005 about a visit in November 2004 | Overall rating: 8.7 |
As a special Christmas treat in 2004, we decided to take a short break at Disneyland Paris to see how Disney portrayed Christmas. This was our third visit to the resort since it opened in 1992 and on the previous two occasions we visited in summer. We wanted to spend as much time in the resort as possible so needed somewhere near, basically just to sleep. We were looking for a cost effective hotel and with 5 adults travelling we booked two rooms at The Explorer’s Hotel. This hotel is located on Disney ‘land’ so is within easy reach of the resort, but is owned by the MyTravel group (Airtours to you and me). The hotel is rated as three star and the cost included continental breakfast and complimentary parking at Disneyland Resort (normally 8 Euros a day) and offered a shuttle bus service to the resort if you chose to use it. Our stay coincided with unusually cold weather in the Paris area, with the temperature below freezing during all of our stay, with mist and freezing fog – which all added to the Christmas ‘feel’ and atmosphere.
The hotel itself is set in spacious grounds with ample car parking, about a ten minute car (or bus) journey from the resort. It is quite new and based on an ‘explorers’ theme but follows the Disney ethos. The reception and check in area were clean and well maintained and our arrival was dealt with efficiently and courteously by the friendly staff who spoke much better English than my French (we English are so lazy in this respect !).
Our rooms were very similar to the sort of rooms you would find in a Travel Inn (or similar) in the UK, although there were no tea making facilities. The TV in the room provided a number of channels, including some in English. Additional pay-per-view channels were also available if you wanted them. Although the room was not overly spacious, this was not a problem as for most guests, it is merely a place to ‘crash’ after tramping around the Disney resort itself. The rooms had a separate toilet and shower/bath with more than ample hot water, ideal for getting the blood running again after the temperatures outside, and enough towels. There was sufficient storage for clothes, although again, this was designed for the 2 or 3 day stays. I have to add that the beds were also extremely comfortable and a good night’s sleep prepared us all for ‘hitting’ the resort the following day. Each room also had an individual heater which was essential during our stay as unusually, the hotel itself was on the chilly side. Maid service was daily, efficient and overall cleanliness was excellent.
There is an indoor swimming pool which I personally didn’t try but my son said the water was a touch on the cold side. To be fair, I think the hotel had been caught out by the unexpected cold snap.
Now the bad news. The food. The inclusive breakfast was standard continental fare and was reasonable i.e. croissants, ham, fruit, yoghurts etc, but for a few euros, you could purchase the good old English ‘fry-up’. My son and daughter, experts in this area, surveyed the offering and gave it a big ”thumbs down”. True, they did not sample the food on offer, but its presentation did not inspire confidence. You needed to choose your time for breakfast as it did get busy around 8:30am with seating at a premium. This may be worse in summer when it’s busier. The hotel also has three places where an evening meal could be obtained: a pizza bar, a buffet bar and a ‘posh’ restaurant. On the second evening we tried the 3 course buffet at 21 euros each – big mistake. The food was cold, tasteless and inedible and we left the whole lot on the table. Disney ‘burgers’ would have been better. The pizza bar or formal restaurant may have been better, but we weren’t prepared to risk it. We dined out at Disney Village for the rest of our stay – I can recommend “Billy Bob’s” all you can eat buffet but go early, it soon gets full.
In summary, the hotel offers good, clean accommodation at a reasonable price. The shuttle bus service was also regular, reliable and convenient. We would stay here again, but definitely eat somewhere else!
So what about Paris Disneyland? Well I’m a bit biased as no matter what you say about Disney, they know how to ‘do it’ compared to Alton Towers for example. We bought 2 day hopper tickets at 89 Euros which gives two full days of entry into the Disney resort and Disney Studios. The latter is new and is a bit disappointing if you have been to the American equivalents – half a day would cover this. However, in the main park, the tickets represent excellent value, with a wide variety of rides, shows and parades to entertain and amuse. Regrettably my favourite ride, “Phantom Manor” was being refurbished during our visit (having new cobwebs fitted perhaps?) which was a pity, but there was plenty more to see and do so you could easily spend two full days to see everything. "Pirates of the Caribbean" was very popular as it was warm inside! There was some queuing, mainly on Thunder Mountain, but the ‘fast pass’ system minimises this and on most rides we just walked straight on, even on the popular Space Mountain.
And finally, who else but Disney would ensure that snow fell on Main Street USA as and when required to really get you in the Christmas spirit! Overall a most enjoyable break – just a shame about the food in the hotel. One final point - commendation to Expedia with whom we booked the flight/hotel/car package – it was easy, efficient, good value and problem free – well done!
