DIY BENIDORM
Having visited Benidorm for over thirty years in all seasons using most of today’s travel companies you get to know which accommodation is worth revisiting and which is not, coupled with the accommodation which should not be in any brochure at all due to the poor standard, sadly more and more of today’s travelers are experiencing these poor standards in the way of accommodation as the tour operators seem to be contracting those apartments which are past their sell by date, then they try to squeeze as much as they can out of their customers.
In the past I was one of those people who never booked a holiday if I could help it, then took a last minute bargain for I always found I could get to Benidorm whatever month it was by flying from Newcastle Glasgow Teesside or Manchester, the downside to this route was that you could end up in some dump – but my luck held as I was never disappointed.
Today I book well in advance but I book online the flights through Easyjet and the apartments or hotel through one of the online booking agents. For instance I booked these apartments directly, booked a low cost flight, booked a return trip taxi from the airport to apartments, bought my own travel insurance and the total cost for three adults was £1260 this worked out at £220 per person cheaper that an identical cost per person in a tour operators brochure for that same period and area and I only booked three weeks before traveling.
For March 2006 I have booked an apartment for £220 this for 1 week but I can put 4 people in it if I want – a two bedroomed apartment with two bathrooms was only £30 more - a tour operator would charge double this and then add a low occupancy charge if only 2 people want to stay. My advice to all who read this review – book it all yourself.
GEMELOS REVIEW
The apartment was based in a residential block which is a great bonus for whilst the apartment block is in a very good position it was away from noise and being residential you did not get noise from noisy drunks coming back in the early hours of the morning. Being an apartment that was let out by the owners I found it well equipped as it had washing machine, ironing board, full cooker, fridge freezer, (the fridge being well used for the gin and tonic and lager ) toaster, coffee maker, ample cooking utensils and cutlery. A dining table for 4, a large balcony which was glassed in and was great at night as it kept any noise out, and a massive wardrobe along one wall of the balcony which was great for our clothes. Below the apartment was a shop but I used the supermarket just a few minutes away. My local became the duty free pub which is situated on the side street for they sold a pint of lager at 99cents and I can honestly say it was one of the nicest pints I have ever tasted in Benidorm.
As we never cook in any apartment we go too due to the very low cost of food in Benidorm we frequented the local Chinese restaurants, chicken restaurants, steak restaurants, and our old favorite the Rio Park Hotel. I wonder how many self caterers in Benidorm realize that you can use the facilities of this hotels dinning room at all meal times by paying at the dinning room door. We only used it at night and for 6 euros (£4.20p) you can sit and have a three course meal, hell the soup and roll was worth the price alone, I just love soup.
The apartment block had a good sized swimming pool that never seemed to really get full and there seemed to be ample sun beds for those using the pool. Needless to say these apartments were kept very clean and at night we found there was always someone on duty when we came in after a night out. I can highly recommend these apartments and I personally would have no qualms about booking them again. These apartments would be great for families with small children, young couples who don’t want to be part of the noisy set, and for people who want an apartment where peace and tranquility reign.
