Golden Sands Travel Guide: Would we go again??

Written by Helen Grantham on 29 Jan 2005 about a trip in May 2002.

Golden Sands restaurants

We would recommend the Chinese restaurant (near the bowling alley, as we recall). We only managed to have 2 drinks in the massive ship bar, we would have liked more. The restaurant/street cafe opposite there was excellent; the service was very good.

Golden Sands day trips

We went on a frightening trip to Varna; watch your belongings and try not to get in to converstions with street traders; you may not be able to get rid of them!!

If we were to go again, we would go on excursions that take you away from the 'fakeness' of the resort and in to the real Bulgaria, which we are sure (from other tourists who went on them) would have been enjoyable.

Golden Sands History and Culture

We went to Golden Sands, Bulgaria in June 2002. It was our first visit to the country and in the whole had an enjoyable time. The only let-down were the locals, who seemed so desparate for your custom that we were constantly nagged in the streets, shops, at the pool by the big 'cuddly' photographers who take pictures of you and say you don;t have to buy them, but nag you until you do. They even picked my boyfriend up in the street to take a picture of him!! In the end it got a bit overwhelming; a weeks holiday was enough for us!!

We stayed in the Hotel Sirena (which isn't listed here) and spent many hours lazing by its excellent swimming pool!! We stayed half-board but were not keen on the food (cabbage with everything!!) so spent a lot of our spending money on eating out. The rooms were clean, the cleaners exellent (they made animal shapes with the towels and put our teddy bears to bed!!) but the only disappointment is nearly being charged for a mini-bar we did not use!!

Would we go again??? Probably not because we like a quiet holiday, but I know people who have been here and loved it!!
