About Gouves | | | Kato Gouves has been built to take advantage of the tourist industry and closes down at winter time. |
Getting to Gouves | | | We were picked up by our travel Rep and taken by bus, about 1hr transfer time after dropping of every one. A taxi will cost you about 25 euro's to Gouves from Heraklion airport. |
Getting around Gouves | | Don't go with your Rep's suggestions for transport hire, check out some of the vendors and you will be able to get a good price for car hire, we were quoted from 75 euro's to 54 euro's for a 3 day hire. The driving in Crete is some of the worst I have ever seen lots of near misses scary overtaking so if I were you I would use public transport. The bus service is good with lovely air conditioned coaches running to all the major places on an hourly basis from early until 21.30 at night. You are picked up at stops on the main road at the top of your resort this road runs the length of crete. Prices are good e.g 4.50 euro's single to Aghios Nikolaos taking aprox 1hr. |
Gouves attractions | | The ancient site of Knossos the palace of king Minos where Theseus was said to have killed the Minotaur.
The Samaria gorge (a long walk not for the faint hearted) |
Gouves restaurants | | Most of the restaurants offer the same menu the Oasis (near the Panthion Hotel) was very good. The best food we ate was on a trip to Aghios Nikolaos at the lake called the Dyonisis try the lamb kleftico, very senic and romantic setting.
Typical price for an evening meal for 2 was between 35-40 euro's including wine. |
Gouves nightlife | | | Gouves is a quiet resort mostly restaurants and a few bars we saw no signs of violence and felt safe. |
Gouves shopping | 6.0 | | There was plenty of shops in the Gouves area, super markets selling fake watches, clothes, pottery and all you require for a self catering holiday. Where were staying at the Maria Kelly and had 2 super markets and several places to eat and a bakery all within a few 100 yards. The main shopping area was a good 20min walk along the sea front, this area had more shops, bars and places to eat. There were even x2 Chinese places plus a couple of Irish bars. |
When to visit Gouves | | We were at Crete from 5th to 19th June 07 the weather was a little cloudy the first week temp around 26 this improved the second week temp rising to 38 before we left, so I would suggest if its the sun you are after don't go until mid June. The beaches at Gouves can be a little windy so watch out you don't get a bad sunburn. |
Gouves day trips | | Your Rep will offer you excursions at your welcome meeting from your resort but if I were you I'd check out the local booking office at the main shopping area mentioned above, You can book excursions to places of interest at a much cheaper rate than your Rep will offer, some trips can be 50% less than the Reps.
We had a trip to Spinalonga (an old Leper Colony island) the bus took ages picking up and dropping people off the actual visit to Spinalonga was quite short and rushed only 1hr the food was basic a pork chop and salad price from Rep was over 100 euro's for 2 and you had to pay the enterance fee at the island.
We went on the Hot to trot trip a horse riding day this was great fun and good value for money, we were complete novices but were given a horse some training and off we went. Great day riding up through the vine yards and olive trees to a fantastic view. We were riding for 3 hrs then back for a rustic meal with plenty of Cretin wine, we were entertained by our host Gregory who was mad as a hatter, great day out. The horse riding was at Heraklion 20min drive from Gouves price 100 euro's for 2. You have your photo taken and can pick it up when you come back price 3 euro's per photo |
