I stayed in the Grande Bretagne in the late 1980s during a one-week trip to Athens in March. The experience was beautiful.
The hotel is closed for refurbishment until early 2003, I hear, so it will be in high demand next year, I imagine. It is a historic building, with a colourful past (the Nazis made it their base during the occupation), and the place seethes with grandeur. The lobby is high, wide, open, and quite ornate. Steps lead down into the large dining room, with paintings, floral arrangements, courteous thoughtful staff, and immaculately clean and well presented table conditions.
The rooms are pretty and well-decorated, well-furnished, with full marble bathroom. Views are fantastic, as the hotel is centrally located, and right opposite the major tourist attraction of Constitution Square, and the National Gardens are close by. The hotel is also well-placed for visits to the shopping areas, museums, etc.
I visited with a friend, and we must have been the least up-market of the guests... we dressed for the demanding tours we were taking every day (that is, comfortable t-shirts and shorts), yet never failed to receive proper respect from the staff.
Speaking of tours, as expected from a major hotel, the reception staff provided assistance in arranging all our trips.
Coming back to this oasis every evening made a great impact on our holiday experience at the time, and I would recommend it to anyone.
The hotel is now owned by the Starwood Group, I believe, and therefore its web address is contained within Starwood's. They also have their own web address, available via Starwoods, which may remain under construction until re-opening of the hotel.
