| Gumbet Travel Guide: tantalising turks and great gumbet
| | Written by troublicious on 11 Aug 2007 about a trip in May 2007. Trip was for a family on holiday. troublicious would definitely visit again.
| Gumbet shopping | | total bargain shopping here!!! Always aim low and don't be embarrassed to barter. If you don't asl you don't get!!! If you decide that the price is too high, just say no thank you!!! You will probably find that they will knock a further few quid off!!! Using sterling also can make your final price lower, although turkish is fine. One of the best shops in Gumbet is situated under the Miradoin Restaurant, opposite from the Sami beach hotel. It offers excellent quality clothes, fab bags and shoes, and lush watches. Just look out for jimmy the asda guy!!. Men@work is another fave of mine, no bartering, but the clothes are cheap and LUSH!
Other than that the larger markets are excellent for bartering. |
Gumbet nightlife | | | Be wary of the men, some will spin you a line to get into your knickers (and indeed some men would like to get into your yfronts too !!) Although do NOT tar them all by the same brush. Some are very lovely and sincere! X-bar, Shakeys and central are all top nites. Pre bar street hit the Miradon for the best cocktails this side of marmaris! Be aware, some bars sell cocktails cheap because they are tourist specials, ie: VERY LITTLE OR NO ALCOHOL!! Value for money and lush flavours is what you get from the Miradon. |
Gumbet restaurants | | Turkish food is fantastic, and the turks will cook you it any which way they can to make you happy. The best restaurant in Gumbet is the MIRADON which is situated opposite the Sami hotel, and upstairs. Fantastic food from a chef that used to run a five star hotel restaurant, and great dining atmosphere because you are above all the people on the street, so you havent got all those gawkers oggling you while you stuff your face (well it is your holiday after all !!!) The Miradon offers both turkish and international cuisine and trust me, you will come back for more!!!!
Ones to avoid really are all the multi international ones ( you know, english, german, dutch, chinese, mexican, indian, any were in the world-ian) The lotus is poor , and avoidable (my ma was sick!!) Anywere that has to give you a bottle of free wine to eat there screams AVOID AVOID in large letters!!! These restaurants are usually doing this because the food is so awful they get no repeat customers (although thats what the food does to you...keeps on repeating all night) |
Gumbet attractions | | All I can say is visit the windmills, so you can see both gumbet and bodrum at once!!! Awesome!
After that definately check out the beach at Gumbet it is exquisite, and clean, and the turkish people are so friendly it hurts!!! |
Gumbet day trips | | Boat trips arwe awesome, and well worth a day out. DO NOT BOOK THRU YOUR TOUR OPERATOR they will rip you off. Instead use one of the nice little tourist trip places along the main drag, all are good, and reputable, especially Queens travel, who totally look after you.
Pamukale is excellent and well worth a visit! |
Gumbet History and Culture | | Just remember that even tho the Turkish people are all drinking and smoking, it IS a Muslim culture, and their ideas on women and men differ from ours. Just be aware of your safety and self, and remember if you treat people with respect, they will treat your in like.
If a Turkish man offers to buy you a drink, by saying yes and accepting you are actually accepting his proposition of sex, so BE AWARE ( the drinks are cheap enough to buy your own!!)
Oh yeah, and jiggy jiggy aint the dance your dad does at family do's, its sex!!!! |
Getting to Gumbet | | All major english airports fly to Gumbet, just check the internet.
Kos has a ferry too and fro every day |
Getting around Gumbet | Walking!!!!
or brave the dolmus, a wee green bus, there are no stops, when you see one, just stick out your hand and it will stop. The driver will tell you how much when you state your destination. Likewise you just get the bus to stop wherever!!!
After that there are taxis, which are cheap enough aswell.
Be warned, the turks drive like maniacs, so dont be afraid, just hang on tight!!! |
When to visit Gumbet | | The season starts in May and end the end of October. Before or after this, everywhere is closed, so not worth going to Gumbet in say December, unless you have your own place. All the Turkish go home to their villages and towns all over turkey! |
