| Hammamet Review: | | Written by Katie Turley on 21 Aug 2004 about a trip in Sep 1998.
| We travelled to Hammamet in the October of 1998, it was my first time to Africa and at first I was shocked by the poverty. Unfortunately, after a while it becomes second nature and you do start to ignore it, it becomes part of the scenery.
This is a country full of people who want to make your stay the best that it can possibly be. They are always happy and helpful, nothing seems like too much trouble.
The resort was being enlarged when we visited, creating the newer Yasmine Hammamet.
There are some very nice places to eat out, you tend to stay in your hotel complex in the evening but we always had a stroll somewhere new during the day.
As the resort is half-way up the coast you will have a transfer time of at least an hour, but the good thing is it tends to make all of the day trips a couple of hours shorter than if you're staying in one of the more southern resorts.
There are lots of places to see and visit, once you're used to the habit of bartering it can also be fun to go of on your own, hire a taxi and visit without another 50 people in tow!!
Great bargains to be had, don't be shy about knocking the price down, they like you to haggle. If you prefer to know that the price you see is the price they pay, don't worry, there are plenty of Government shops where there's no haggling, but they're not as much fun. |
