Holiday Inn Resort: Overall - Enjoyable Stay by Kerry Vass |
| Posted 01 June 2005 about a visit in February 2005 | Overall rating: 7.8 |
We stayed at the Holiday Inn, Sharks Bay at the end of March/beginning of April 2005. The hotel which is rated 4 - 5* is in some respects but not in others. We stayed on a Half Board basis, the food was not great, I am a great food lover and it is part of the enjoyment of a holiday as far as I'm concered, so maybe I'm a little too critical. I also enjoy a glass of wine with my food but that was extra expensive unless you can stomach the ghastly Egyptian red wine! The breakfast was fine, a wide choice was available but it wasn't always easy to get tea/coffee when it was busy. The alcohol in the bars was also very expensive. We took some duty free spirits with us but there was no vending machine or shop selling mixers in the hotel. A small bottle of tonic water from the bar was about £1!!! We went into Naama Bay and stocked up on mixers and got pulled aside by the hotel security - apparently you are not supposed to do such a thing - oops! If you are going to smuggle mixers and drink into the hotel, I would suggest that you don't go through reception - go the long way round on foot. The swimming pools were plentiful and not at all crowded although it soon became apparent why - they were freezing! It was ok once you got used to it. Loungers had to be got early on in the day. The rooms are basic, we had some construction work going on next to us and it was rather noisy but we are early risers so it wasn't a problem. The fridge and A/C were great and we had a beautiful sea view but thats really the only nice things I can say about the room, the beds were too small for two people and we are only a young recently married couple! I would go back to Sharm but I would probably try another hotel and pay a little extra money, but if you aren't too bothered about the food and don't mind a basic room, the Holiday Inn is absolutely fine. If you are visiting in March/April, bring along some warm clothes for the evenings/early mornings because it can be really cold - I wished that I had brought a jacket and some jeans or trousers. Just one last thing, if you are not fit, do not choose this hotel as there is so much walking because its such a big spread out hotel and the shuttle bus is not that regular.

Holiday Inn Resort: One Holiday Inn that's seen better days by Mairi Walker |
| Posted 06 February 2005 about a visit in December 2004 | Overall rating: 7.0 |
Stayed here the last week in January. Not wholly impressed by the Holiday Inn and feel it is in dire need of refurbishment and updating to maintain it's 4.5 star rating. Rooms although spotlessly clean were rather shabby, with wood on bedroom units peeling and grout in bathrooms mouldy. Breakfast time at the hotel was like a busy market in the mornings and we found the food bland and uninspiring. We stayed on a B & B basis which allowed us the opportunity to go into "town" and sample the food on offer in the numerous different restaurants there. Used the blue & white taxis twice during our stay and had a very bad experience with our driver the second night who was high on drugs. Use them at your own risk. After that we prefered to use the ones located in the grounds of the hotel, which only cost £1 more on a 2 way journey. Agree the price before you leave and arrange for him to pick you up again. You pay after the return journey and at LE60 it was worth every Egyptian pound giving the feeling of safety and comfort in a well maintained car. Most of the staff at the hotel were friendly and pleasant, but we felt they waited for tips each time they did their job. Our room wasn't cleaned for 2 days, without explanation, and on the 2nd day I complained to reception. 7pm the room boy arrived, and once done waited for a tip! We always leave tips at the end of a holiday and felt we shouldn't have to tip for having to ask someone to do their job.
Beach at the hotel gets very busy and although it's difficult to walk into, there are many walkways out into the sea from which you can swim off, or just sit on and watch the marine life. Hotel allocate you towel cards on arrival so there's really no need to carry beach towles in your case all the way to Egypt. Much better to save the space for other items. Alcohol is quite expensive at the hotel, so suggest you buy at duty free before arriving. Food and drinks are also dearer in the hotel with meals costing almost double the price than those of places in town. Payment for bills at reception when checking out must be by $US , £ Sterling or credit card. They will not accept Egyptian Pounds. so don't be caught out. During our weeks stay the weather was absolutely brilliant. Temps in the high 70's every day but the night times were an awful lot cooler.
Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday to Sharm, however doubt we would ever stay in this hotel again.

Holiday Inn Resort: fun in sunny sharm by Linda Bover |
| Posted 06 October 2004 about a visit in July 2004 | Overall rating: 9.5 |
I just returned from Sharm, staying in a family room. The holiday inn has 4 great swimming pools and was never really any where near busy. The hotel itself is 4* but the rooms are a basic 3*. They are extremely clean and are rigorously cleaned daily. The ataff are fantastic anf friendly. It has a lovely beach, although it is not gently shelving so is not suitable for children unless they like swimming in deep water. Beautiful it is, but not really safe for the little ones. Naama bay is great for night life and there are plenty of excursions on offer to cairo and luxor. The only real 5* accomodation in sharm is the four seasons, followed by the Hyatt regency.
If you want some thing a little more up market with shelving beaches try El gouda in Hurgada, also in Egypt.
If youre looking for fun, Sharm has night life, casinos and a great people. The holiday inn get a thumbs up from me.
