A typical hotel room in the gothic honolulu

I've done it justice here, but anyway this is smokers corner

Hotel Honolulu - October 3rd - 17th.

When i booked this hotel,as a family holiday for myself,my husband and our 7 year old daughter,i felt a little dubious, having read such bad reports about the hotel itself. But i have always been one with the opinion that what is Bad for one,may turn out to be quite fantastic for another! I Do prefer to make up my own mind if you wish.

Being a frequent All Inclusive traveller,to 3 star hotels i can safely say that i am aware of the basic standards with regards to food etc.

Anyhow,i went with an open mind. Now my first impression was that of mixed emotions to be quite honest. The very first thing that hits you,is the rather steep hill up to the hotel, which as we're still young enough - this didnt seem to be a problem. But there are around 20 steps ( after the hill ) leading up to the reception area. Again not a problem,i thought!! Now as a family we had 3 cases, and as the case lift was broken ( for quite sometime by the looks of it) we had to lift all cases up ourselves, there is no assistance available. This too didnt seem to bother me that much,it was a little shock to the system, but still - i was there to enjoy my holiday.

On entering our room, you instantly notice that it is fairly basic, yet clean! In a gothic sort of way. We had a very spacious room, the only flaw was that we were roomed just above Magalufs famous Sling shot, which did become quite noisy at time, but AGAIN this wasnt going to put me off my holiday.

As All Inc customers, you are provided with a Cream Band ( Adults ) Blue band ( children ) So that the hotel bar staff can tell the difference between those almost looking 18. There are no chances of you getting a drink if you're under-age,but that might not be such a bad thing?

As we arrived early afternoon,we were in time for our first taste of the All inclusive feature,Meal times..... The resturaunt looked clean on first impressions, and the food - although VERY basic, seemed to be alright. After all it was only the first day. There are two lines of food, more or less the same on either side. And a small selection of sweets.

The nightmare begins.

Our first night we decided having travelled most of the day, that we would stay in and have a few drinks, they were paid for after all. There is a very strict No smoking policy in the hotel, you can smoke either in your rooms,or outside the hotel. Not in the dining or disco area. So we being smokers, sat outside on the terrace, which has plenty of seats and a pool table to keep the kids busy. This is where we came across a couple of guests who were eager to inform myself and other new guests about the recent thefts taking place on all floors. Doors were apparently being kicked in. Well i didnt worry about this as i always hire a safe. BUT we were then informed that the thieves had been known to pull the safe from the wall,so of course immediatly my hubby and i went to the room in disbelieve, quite worried in all honesty. I went to check out the safe, and rightly,it could easily be removed from the wall. The next day i went to the welcome meeting, which i never do.. to voice my concerns to the Rep in the hotel, but to no such avail,he basically didnt want to know,i was told that this was a case of chinese whispers and that i was the first to bring it to his attention. Having then spoke to other guests during our stay,it turned out he had used the same line on them! Oh well,i was STILL willing to give it a chance.

THE POOL AREA

Now i cant complain as such about the pool,it was fairly clean and my daughter enjoyed it,as kids do. The problem there was,the fact that you had to cross a small path/road ( not a busy one) only accessed by staff and guests. Followed by yet some more steps. There is a pool bar, that due to us going in October, closed at 4pm. The bar only serves drinks,no snacks.. so it did become a problem having to climb up steps and more steps and then some more to get a bight to eat. Which brings me to my next flaw... the meals.....

MEALS

Now here is where the problem REALLY lies, after 3 days my family and i could eat no more, other than breakfast which i guess is the same where ever you are. English breakfast with the usual, and served from 8-10 every morning.
Lunch was a different story, there wasnt really much of a choice, unless you like chips with every dish. Lunch is served between 12.30-3pm.

There is a snack time, which is 3.30 - 5.30 which consists of the same every day, burgers and sausages - they become quite repetetive if thats all you can stomach believe me.

Tea is served from 6.30 - 8pm Basically lunch left overs, with what they care to call a carvery,to be honest i wouldnt feed it to a stray cat.

Now having faced the wrath of meal times,we couldnt bare it any longer and found ourselves eating out, which became a total waste of money, having already paid all inclusive. I do not say this lightly - nor myself or any member of my family are or have been fussy eaters whilst on holiday, but that is beyond belief.
Again this was reported to the Rep who AGAIN chose to ignore our concerns by saying he couldnt understand the problem,he ate in there - of course he did,it was free for him, although nobody ever saw him present at meal times?

ENTERTAINMENT

I cant complain about this,as our daughter loved the kids disco, which consists of 4 songs, lasts half an hour and is followed by Bingo. Enter it,as if you win it is good prize money, around 200 Euro's.. you might be in with a chance of winning your wasted money back!! After bingo,at 10pm there is some sort of show, but i really cant comment on this as we left the hotel, to go elsewhere.

HOTEL STAFF

The cleaners are spot on,fresh towels and clean rooms every day,on one occassion the 3 of us were ill ( funny that isnt it? ) and i did ask them "No clean" but they took it upon themselves to clean around us,in the end i gave up and let them get on with it,very determined i'll give them that.

The Bar staff tend to crack a smile every now and then, when tipped of course. But the staff in resturaunt are like the queens guards,do not disturb them in their hour of... obviously not cooking up a storm!

RECOMMENDATIONS

I have a view,if you come across the same problem at meal time,as we and several others did, find Sams bar which is infront of the hotel, obviously a walk as The hotel is on a steep hill, find that or Ruby Tuesdays,as the food in both places are to very high standards, unlike the honolulu.

If you wish to call home, dont use the hotels phone downstairs, its a money eater. Use the one at the bottom of the drive, you can purchase a card from reception that gives you added minutes.

My only other Recom is that if you still can, then change your holiday,go to another hotel, stay well clear of the honolulu. No doubt you shall see it featuring on a holiday hell program in the future if their standards dont change!

IN A NUTSHELL

The very last thing i have to say is that,if i won this holiday in a raffle i wouldnt go nor sell it to my worse enemy! My family and i are very dissapointed with every aspect of the place,it hand on heart needs a star knocking off. If you're reading this before booking, please please dont do what i did,and give it a chance.
I only wish i had listened and taken on board what i read on here.

Happy Holidays ( we need them after all )

Kel x

View up the steep hill to the Hotel Honolulu

I see other reports on this hotel for roughly the same time that we stayed at this hotel and I cannot recognise the descriptions. My Wife and I first stayed at the Honolulu in June 2000 and found it to be a good value hotel with no major concerns. We are frequent travellers to Mallorca, especially Palma Nova/Magalluf.

We booked to go back again in June 2002 and were shocked at the fall in quality at this hotel. Staff numbers had been seriously reduced and 1 bar had been closed completely. There were long queues at the bar in the evening and the food was not good. Rooms were clean though and Staff friendly and helpful.

It became clear that this hotel is being deliberately overbooked and used to get bookings with the intention of relocating people after arriving. A lot of family groups are being offered free upgrades to 4* at the Hotel Cala Vinas upon arrival leaving the younger element who want to be near the nightlife behind.

My advice is DO NOT stay at the Honolulu unless you want the proximity of the bars and clubs, noisy teenagers and people jumping in the pool at 5-6 AM and the steep hill.

We stayed at the Honolulu in April 1999 under an All Inclusive board. It was very good. Plenty of good entertainment and nicely located. They were not at all mean with the drinks and it was excellent for the children. Would definately return again.
