Iberostar Bouganville Playa: Great hotel to stay in. by Peter Warnes |
| Posted 19 March 2006 about a visit in March 2006 | Overall rating: 9.1 |
After reading all the reviews before staying at the Bourganville Playa, I was slightly nervous to say the least. I was however, pleasantly surprized at how wrong most of the reviews were.
The refurbished rooms and communal areas are clean and fresh with lovely curtians and furniture.
The food was excellent, with the exception of the beef, being rather like shoe leather, but this was the only bad meal I had.
It is a shame that smoking is banned from almost everywhere inside. I believe that they could have smoking zone tucked in a corner somewhere.
The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful, and in the dining room, the waiters even remembered what drinks we were drinking from one day to the next. (Not bad as the restaurant seated 500)
I thought the Bourganville was real value for money, and a lovely change from the self catering appartments that I usually stay in, in Playa De Las America's.
My one complaint is that I wish they had tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. I am typicially English wanting a cup of tea as soon as I awake. It's a pain having to drink water first thing.

Iberostar Bouganville Playa: Bouganville Playa by Lisa Conway |

Our review of the Bouganville Playa – travel date 16.12.05 – 30.12.05
After our experience of the coach last year we travelled by taxi to the hotel, this took around 10 minutes and cost 20euros.
We went to this hotel being told by several people that it was better than the Torviscus, where we went last year. After our experience of both we don’t really think there is much difference between the 2.
The food is ok, more selection than the Torviscus, however we don’t eat fish so can’t comment on that, the meat was cheap, undercooked, fatty cuts which we wouldn’t touch. Saying that loads of salad, another holiday where no weight was gained! There was show cooking for both breakfast and evening meals. Christmas dinner was quite nice although the hotels insist on making 2 sittings so that the dining room is like a cattle market. We ate out for 3 nights as the quality and lack of decent food gave both my husband and I stomach cramps.
Before we arrived I e-mailed the hotel with 3 requests, my e-mail was immediately replied to saying that my requests would be arranged. I asked for a low floor room, 20 extra coat hangers and a room away from the road works. When we arrived one of our requests had been met. This was the low floor; we were in a second floor room (however being in a second floor room actually means you are already 5 floors up in this hotel). We were slap bang facing the road works, and there were 5 measly coat hangers. I sorted the coat hanger situation out, but didn’t think the road works would be too much of a problem. Our room was nice with a tiled floor new furniture and new bathroom. After being informed on this forum that the rooms hadn’t been refurbished I found this odd as the room in the Torviscus were quite old and scuffed and expected these to be the same. However I was informed by a woman who has been to this hotel 14 times that the first and second floor rooms were renovated after a fire 2 years ago.
The hotel pool areas were spotless with loads of sun beds, which the pervy pool man was fanatical about keeping in regimented lines!
The Hotel bars were expensive as expected.
Loads of wasted space in this hotel, it became quite a chore going down to the pool (five floors from our room) to the restaurant (4 floors from our room) when we don’t use lifts!
The reception area was nice but the stairs down to the bars/pool/restaurant reminded us of a multi storey car park, dimly lit and depressing.
We went to loads of bars, the ones directly across from the hotel were all ok apart from the star bar. We were constantly being asked to have more drinks even when we still had half our glass left. We even had half full glasses whipped away from in front of us. We are quite big drinkers so are not in the practise of sitting nursing the same pint for an hour. So what at first seemed like good service eventually became irritating, especially during our last drink we were asked 6 times to have another. On the 6th time my husband said to the waitress “Will you just get out of our faces for a little while?” She was very confrontational and rude, then poked her face close to my husband almost nose to nose and replied, “I’ll get in your face if I wanna get in your face, what you gonna do about it? You won’t get anywhere in Tenerife if you can’t cope with people in your face!” My husband said to her that he would get drinks when we were ready, she pointed to my glass and said “Look at her, she’s nearly finished!”
When we told her to look on here for a review in 2 weeks time she just laughed. I just hope this review prevents some customers at least.
That was our only awful experience (on our first night) we used many bars down Puerto Colon, our favourite being Kitty O’Sheas, a newly opened bar whilst we were there. Entertainment every night, very reasonable prices and excellent service. We both wish the proprietors Danny and Kath all the very best in their new venture.
The weather while we was there was on the whole very good, there were only 2 days when you couldn’t sit out at all. One was the first Tuesday we were there, it started raining on the Monday night at 11.30 and didn’t stop until Tuesday night. Another day was cloudy for the whole of the day. Other than that the sun came out every day and we have great tans!
When we go to Tenerife again we will go Self catering.
