Iberostar Quetzal: Best vacation for the money by Glenn Bartholomew |
| Posted 10 August 2005 about a visit in September 2003 | Overall rating: 9.0 |
We loved the Playacar resort area. The beaches are crowded, and European dress code is observed, as the European men and women appear to wear each others swimming suits, if you catch the drift. Some trip reports complain that Europeans are rude. They never bothered me, except for their increased tendancy to smoke. It's actually kind of fun to watch them. The resort is all-inclusive. This means that you have free flowing food and drink 24 hours a day. How good is the food? Good, sometimes only fair, but there is a lot to choose from. The a-la-carte restaurants break up the monotony. What a relief—not having to concern yourself with food decisions for a whole week. For families, you can’t do better. For couples, it still pretty darn good. If the kids aren’t ready for breakfast at 8:30 am, we leave them, and they can meet up with us at the pool or beach. It is easy to roll from the spectacular lake sized pool to the turquoise beach to snorkeling down the coast to hiking to Playacar and then doing it all over again. It would be very easy to go back, because I have seen both sets of ruins twice, and would feel like resting at the resort this time. It is frankly “bargain priced” due to the low cost of “slave labor” in the region. If you go, tip generously as these people work very hard for their buck an hour. A $2 tip goes along ways to improving their day. The grounds—a literal rain forest style jungle with trails and wild animals—were impeccable. The lobby was impressive. The white sands—especially at the neighboring Riu resorts—are fantastic (except for jogging—too soft). If you want to escape the crowds, there are vacant beaches to the south down around the best snorkeling in the area. The rooms are nice and conventional by most US standards, but not even comparable to my favorite five star resort in Bora Bora at $1,000 per night. There is a real pulse during the day with the music and activities, if you do those kinds of things. Outside the resort area, you are still in Mexico. But the Playacar resort area encompasses about 10 large all-inclusive resorts, side by side, and very secure. The only way for a non-employee/non-patron to get in is to hike about a mile and a half along the ocean. Send me back anytime. For a reasonably cheap trip, it cannot be beat.

Iberostar Quetzal: Iberostar Tucan, Playacar by Alan |
| Posted 29 March 2004 | Overall rating: 10.0 |
Stayed 7 nights in March 2004, following 7 nights in the interior on the Yucatan classical tour of the Mayan sites.
This hotel, with its sister, the Quetzal, ( although two Receptions, once within, you cannot tell which hotel you are in ) is excellent. The grounds are preserved ( or possibly re-created ) rainforest, with exotic birds, monkeys and iguanas, leading to a perfect beach of soft, white sand.
Restaurants are two buffets and four themed 'speciality' being Italian, Caribbean, Mexican and Grill. Superb!
Both hotels are 'all-inclusive' and there are no exceptions or restrictions.
