InterContinental Barclay: Brilliant hotel by Gavin Wilkinson |

We landed at Newark and didnt know what to expect. Neither of us had been to NYC before. I was excited, she was nervous, apprehensive.
We came out of a tunnel and WOW!, what a feeling. A massive smile hits your face, as you look up in splendour at the skyscrapers, and the grandure of everything!.
The taxi from Newark airport cost us about $60 (£33) at the time we went. We booked into the hotel and felt very out of place in such a posh hotel (the best i have been too so far). There was a massive flower arrangement in the lobby and immaculately polished marble floors. We went to our room and again, WOW!..the room was perfect. A super kingsize bed, a massive wardrobe and tv cupboard combination, a good sized bathroom and a fully stocked minbar. We looked out of the window and were greeted by the peak of the Chrysler building. It was just like sex and the city! (hate the program but she loves it). By this time, we both just wanted to get out and see everything, so we abandoned our bags and went straight back down to the hotel lobby, and walked out into the street. We walked for a bit and stumbled upon Grand central station, which is staggering. We then walked over to times square where we asked, not impossed upon, but asked by a street vendor if we were interested in a bus tour. We immediately accepted (fixed price of £60 for us both i think it was) and paid for our tickets, which were valid for the next 2 days.
By this time we were both feeling hungry so we walked around for a bit and stumbled upon an Irish American bar/restaurant which we liked the looks of. I had the best steak i had ever had and she had Buffalo spicey chicken wings which were scrumpcious. The food along with a couple of beers came to about £35.
We went bed as we were cream crackered.
Got up the next morning and went to look for an italian diner to have breakfast in, and immediately found one. The portions werent massive, but the free topups on cawfee were brill. The smiles just wouldnt stop.
The atmosphere in NYC is the best. I want to go back!!..
We spent the day on a tourbus going round lower manhattan and visiting all the places you go to nyc to see. Maceys, empire state (MUST GO UP TO TOP), Liberty island, etc....Have a hotdog at one of the stand near the boat points for liberty island. Have extra saukraut, ketchup and mustard. Its the best hotdog in the world
Top tip..Dont spent too much time in maceys, its just a store..theres so much to see outside..
We then took a night bus tour that evening, and this for me was yet another hightlight (yes yes yes, driving around on the top of an open top bus in feb (-2 deg C before windchill) was a highlight). Going over the manhattan bridge, looking up at all the building lit up was breathtaking!.
Take a camera and camcorder, you will use it!. I took 400 still photos and 2hours of footage.
After the bus ride we stopped on our way back to the hotel and grabbed a chinese takeaway from a store to take back to the room with us. We ate up and collapsed with exhaustion. I know it doesnt sound like we did alot, but trust me, we did!.
Got up the next day and headed for the bus pickup point again. This time it took us up to Harlem which is partly rundown but still very beautiful nonetheless. Some of the architecture is very unique. We didnt get off in harlem because girlfriend was too scared. It looked very safe to me..
We spent the evening watching the Rangers getting whooped by the Canadiens at Madison Square Gardens.
We took alot of taxis whilst in nyc as walking simply takes too much time and the prices were all cheap!..alot cheaper than uk cab fares..
We went back to the hotel room and ordered up room service, 2 big pizzas, and 2 portions of fries. This was the only food we ate int he hotel as it was very expensive ($20 for eggs on toast). The food was excellent!..
We very last treat was still in store..We were due to leave nyx at 8pm which meant it was dark, and i normally hate flying at night cuz i cant see anything..NOT this time. You take off from newark and bank right and all you can see up close is the manhattan skyline, which is truly awesome.. (make sure you have windowseat on right of plane)..
A perfect trip at a top hotel.
