| Kalamaki Review: just the job | | Written by Jackey Lancaster on 27 Oct 2005 about a trip in Sep 2005.
| | Kalamaki was a real pleasant surprise, having read as much as we could before we went we were dreading the noise from the airport, but as it turned out it was no problem at all - it was quite entertaining watching the planes taking off and landing as we were laying on the beach! The town is just big enough to keep you occupied without being over the top - good quality restaurants (Michaelos and Mermaids were best we found) bars to suit all ages and very reasonable prices. Bar Soda was our favourite (it may not be the same in mid summer) the quiz was good fun and certainly had us at loggerheads for a few hours everynight! The beaches are nice and unspoilt and the sea is shallow for a good distance - ideal for little children. We hired a jeep for 3 days and saw virtually the entire island (you could possible do it in a day but would not have time to stop and enjoy the places you found), we found some lovely little places not promoted by the tour companies. We were also dreading our return home (the fear made worse by the tour company rep who kept on and on about it) due to the ancient airport, but as it was October and ours was the last flight of the day it wasnt too bad, but I can see that the departure terminal must be an absolute nightmare in the summer! the new building is supposed to be finished for next season - but we shall wait and see! All in all a lovely island, very friendly and something for everyone, we will definately return. |
