Kalkan Review: Kalkan is built up the side of a very steep mountain

Kalkan is built up the side of a very steep mountain so its not very good for the less mobile. However, that is probably about the only bad news about Kalkan.

Kalkan is a large village with a mix of old and new architecture. It has a lively and pretty harbour with a mix of private yachts and tourist gullets.

If food is important, this is the place for you as it seems to have almost as many restaurants to choose from as there are people. Prices range from cheap to reasonable and quality is generally high. Unlike most places the harbour area is reasonably priced as by the time you get down to the harbour to eat most people have been picked off by the staff of the restaurants further up the hill. Like most Turkish resorts there are people employed to get you into their restaurant but the hassle factor is much more low key here than most places.

There are a number of good shops in the village but its not a big shopping resort. It is good for clothing and the hand made shirts are very good value along with the usual fake labels.

If you like to get out and about you are probably better off with a car. There is a dolmus station but they only go to Kas (the next village along the coast) and the excellent beach at Patara.

There is a small beach next to the harbour but it is small and rocky. If you need a beach go to Patara (about 15 mins by Dolmus).

Good sights to see within an hour are the village and market at Kas. The sunken city at Kekova, Tombs at Myra and Roman Ruins at Patara (near beach), Xsanthos, Letoon and Limyra.

Dont miss a day trip on a Gullet. The views are outstanding and with food included a good day out can be had for less than £10 sterling.
