| I have been a great fan of Kalkan for about 10 years now. My most recent visit was in September 2005 when I returned for the sixth time. The last time I visited was in 2003 and, to be honest, I was saddened by the amount and quality of development that had ocurred in between visits.
Kalkan has always been an idyllic place and there is a campaign to try and keep it that way. However, I fear that there is a real lack of planning and consistency in the new developments. Villas and apartments appear to be springing up all over the place without proper consideration to planning, infrastructure, consistency of design or finishing touches such as hard and soft landscaping.
This has the effect of turning Kalkan into a building site. Luckily we stayed in the old town away from the rubble and will continue to do so if we return to Kalkan in the future. However, judging by the number of 'full english breakfast' signs this year and the fact that the road from Dalaman is being improved - no doubt heralding the arrival of the screaming package hordes, I am not sure we will be back. |
