| Kalkan Review: Simply The Best | | Written by Mike Marshall on 16 Oct 2005 about a trip in Sep 2005.
| We returned to Kalkan after an 18month break and yes there were changes. It has to be said that not all are for the better. There has been a large amount of building, mainly aprtments and villas. Probably because of our love of the place!
However the basic charm of the place and friendliness of the people remains and in some respects, you feel as if you're coming home, as people remember you in the restaurants and shops. The shops remain very much the same but the restaurants appear to be breeding. I was told that there are in excess of 200 this year. It is hard to find a bad meal. You can pay £8 for three courses or £18 pounds, either way you'll be presented with a good meal.
We visited Kosk which we missed out last year, to find this restaurant, always good, had moved up a gear. The decorations were improved and the food/presentation excellent. Another small restauarant is Rami's. Again on a terrace, serving good quality meals in a friendly atmosphere. However our favourite is still the Old Trading House for quality, presentation an service. I understand that the owners Kate & Ali are opening an Hotel next year on the Kalamar Road, which if the restaurant is anything to go by, I will be very interested in seeing. I wish them well.
This year we stayed at the Samira which we found very acceptable. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It is certainly on my list for another visit.
Another wonderful holiday, BUT........................
Please Mr Mayor, don't let greed and over development spoil such a charming place. |
