| Kalkan Travel Guide: Kalkan - Little England
| | Written by Carole on 28 May 2007 about a trip in May 2007. Trip was for a couple on holiday. Carole would definitely visit again.
| Kalkan shopping | 7.0 | The Bulut store in the harbour area is one of the best for most things that you may have forgotten or didn't realise you needed! They are very friendly and helpful, you don't need to barter here as everything is price marked. They speak excellent English and are very happy to teach you new words!
If you want to buy jewellery then it really is worth a visit to Kas as it is much cheaper, they weigh the gold, always a good sign!
Kalkan is very good for browsing, the owners have realised that you are more likely to buy if after greeting you, they leave you alone! |
Kalkan nightlife | 8.0 | This is not the place to go if you are looking for somewhere loud and energetic. However if you wish to spend evenings over long meals and listening to music this is the place for you. There are so many places to eat and we honestly didn't find one bad one! If you need to watch Sky Sports there are many bars that have this facility!
We found Kalkan to be very safe, the people very friendly and helpful. No violence, infact we didn't hear one siren in the whole two weeks of our visit! |
Kalkan restaurants | 10.0 | If you love steak then the best place, we think, not only in Kalkan but in Turkey is Alternatif Atlantis. They have a rooftop restaurant and when the weather is bad you can eat inside so every eventuality is covered! It's not only the steak that is good, every meal is freshly prepared and served with flair. Once you have been there you will keep returning!
If you want somewhere for lunch then try the Merkez in the centre. It is right in the corner oppisite the bag shop. Food is well cooked and again, the staff are very friendly and helpful. It is wonderful to sit and people watch as well as looking at those wonderful bags!
The Aubergine by the harbour is very expensive but ok for a one off! |
Kalkan day trips | | This being our second trip to Kalkan we did our trips on our own which is very easy and a whole lot cheaper than through the tour operator! You only have to go to the harbour to pick a day trip out to sea, really worth doing. If you want a day diving than you can't go wrong if you go to the Dolphin Scuba Diving, they are situated at the end of the harbour near the Bulut store. We had a day out one of us diving and one of us reading, sleeping and taking photo's. Lunch was provided and that really was lovely with plenty of it! The only thing I would say, and this is the same for all the boat trips, the drinks are very expensive so I would take your own.
We visited Fethiye market on the dolmus, much cheaper than taking a taxi and so much more fun! We also visited Olu Deniz and Kas the same way, you get to meet so many people. The dolmus station is right by the taxi rank along the main road. |
Kalkan History and Culture | | | Kalkan is a lovely village that now attracts many tourists. It seems to be a place that is being bought up by the English. Almost every shop you go in there will be an English person working there! Lots of the villas are owned by the English, there are times when it is hard to find a Turkish person. When you do they are friendly and if you have learned even just a few words of Turkish they are over the moon! A lot of families seem to have someone married to an English person, they seem quite pleased about it as well! For some reason they like to visit England as much as we do Kalkan, go figure? |
Getting to Kalkan | 8.0 | | We went from Gatwick to Dalaman airport, this has been improved since we were last there. It is very expensive to eat or drink there though. We had a coach to Kalkan but there are plenty of taxi's if you want to do it privately. The transfer takes about two hours but the scenery is out of this world so it really doesn't seem that long. |
Getting around Kalkan | | Dolmus is the cheapest way of getting around. We did use taxi's to return to our hotel as Kalkan is very hilly and I have arthritis. Saying that, I did manage to walk back a few times, not on the really hot days though! Taxi's are quite cheap and come very quickly, if you can get to the taxi rank then it is even easier as there is always a taxi waiting! We are considering hiring a car next time, we only realised how cheap it was towards the end of our second week, so it worth looking into that. |
When to visit Kalkan | | May, September and October are the best times to visit here. It gets very hot in peak season, we were there in May and it reached ninety degrees! Not every day though, I'm glad to say. Sometimes in the evening you may need a light jacket or pashmina but nothing any heavier. |
