| Kardamena Review: Absolutely Brilliant | | Written by John Harris on 25 Aug 2003 about a trip in Jul 2003.
| Just returned from Kardamena, having had a great time. Read some of the reviews on here before we went and was a little apprehensive that the nightlife and the resort might be too lively.
Well we need not have worried the town was just the right size not too big and sprawling and not too small that you felt trapped. The nightlife was lively, however it’s possible to fine bars and restaurants where the music is not too intrusive. If you want an all day breakfast then this is your town. Having said that there is also ample opportunity to sample Greek and International cuisine in many restaurants, just keep away from McDonalds
The beaches are nothing fantastic running in thin strips either side of the centrally positioned harbour. However they are very popular as there are many apartments and some hotels without a pool.
The harbour is great, overlooked by the restaurants and bars on the front, and will be even better when the final touches are completed. Plenty of ferries for excursions to Mythinos, Bubble beach etc. pretty reasonably priced as well. We took the ferry to Kos Town, which gave us some superb views of the mountains on the way up, and also over to Kalymnos (plenty of genuine sponges) and Pserimos (fantastic beach). Don’t book just for Kalymnos – not enough to justify a complete day.
The two main streets “The Strip” are great for souvenir “tat” plenty of Oakley shades and Versace belts plus other places selling better quality gear and Greek craft pottery and fabrics. And bars galore, believe me if you’ve a thirst on this is the place to go.
The locals are very friendly and seem genuinely so! If I have one gripe about the holiday it is that the PR’s can be a pain in the ass. After the first few days it’s easy to recognise the main culprits and it remarkably easy to gently wind them up! Strangely enough we found that some of the more popular, and better quality eating houses (Avli, Ariadni) didn’t need to employ hordes of PR’s (Amazon and Camelot take note).
The weather was amazing if anything a tad too hot with temperatures averaging 35º C in the shade, fortunately there is a fairly stiff breeze that cools you down a bit. On the couple of days when the wind died down it was bloody hot!
Fantastic time, loved it to bits.
