| The visit to Poros was the second week of a twin centre holiday to Greece. After a week staying at the Golden Coast Hotel on the Bay of Marathon, fairly close to Athens, Poros was perfect. The only problem we had was that as it was coming to the end of the season, all but one of the organised excursions were cancelled because of low numbers. The one that wasn't was the trip through the Corinth Canal, which was spectacular. The new town of Corinth wasn't anything special, but the journey through the canal was amazing, even on a small boat. The return trip called off at Aegina. I can still smell the squid being cooked on some sort of stove in the open air.
Several of us from the hotel were disappointed that the excursions weren't available so we organised our own trip to Hydra, tickets were easily purchased from the local tourist office.
The walk up to the temple of Poseidon was exhausting but well worth it, if only for the views when we reached the top of the hill. Take plenty of water as there is only one taverna on the round trip of about 5 miles. |
