Kolymbia Travel Guide: Kolymbia - relatively unspoilt by commercialism

Written by Gordon Hammond on 17 Jul 2007 about a trip in Jun 2007.
Trip was for a couple on holiday. Gordon Hammond would definitely visit again.

Kolymbia shopping

5.0
There are a handful of tourist tat shops, local craft shops (soaps, sponges, & herbs), and mini-markets along the main road into the resort. A specialist boutique selling high quality leather and fur coats (in case it gets chilly ?!), and a couple of classy jewellery outlets complete the limited shopping facilities. There is a good pharmacy in the resort, and it's one of only two on the Island that stays open 'till 23:00. All retailers speak very good english, and are very welcoming without being too pushy. When buying clothing from them it might be worth trying to haggle the price down a few euro's. There are two car hire centres, with Rhodos Cars being the more well-established dealer, but both use modern up-to-date models (not rent-a-wrecks). There are also hire centres for two wheeled transport & quad bikes, but check your holiday insurance covers you to ride them (most don't !). There's no banking facilities in the resort, but there is a cashpoint machine opposite the Atlanica Imperial Resort Hotel.

Kolymbia nightlife

4.0
Nightlife in resort is limited to a couple of bars (Memories, & Zorbas) putting on tribute acts once a week. As the resort mainly consists of hotels (of all standards), it's worth touring them during the day to see their notice boards to find out what's on at which hotel. It's a very quiet resort by normal standards. and during our two week stay we saw no trouble, hassle, or drunken behaviour at all (just lots of happy tourists !). The police do patrol in their cars and on their bikes, mainly handing out parking tickets and sorting local disputes.

Kolymbia restaurants

4.0
The two resaurants are next to each other on the main road through the resort, although some of the other bars also have food available during the daytime. Nikko's was the only one we tried - as we were holidaying A/I at our hotel - and we found it very nice and friendly, with good service at reasonable price. They offer the usual chips-with-everything menus, but also serve a few local dishes including Pitta Gyros' (kebabs) and Mousaka.

Kolymbia attractions

4.0
The resort lies in the shadow of Tsambike mountain, and if you're feeling ambitious (or energetic) you can take a hike up to the small monastery on the very top (you can drive halfwy up, but it's a narrow track!). The views from there are quiet spectacular, so don't forget your camera ! Ladies be warned:- the legend has it that if a woman wanted to get pregnant she had to walk up the mountain to the monastery barefoot with her partner and the Gods would grant her a child. Personally,I doubt if she'd have the energy to do anything after that walk !! Several Kilometres up the coast - towards Faliraki - is Anthony Quinn Bay, which sits in the shadow of the mountain used as the setting for the famous war film The Guns Of Navarone (hence the bay's name). There are buses & organised trips to Lindos (25km), Rhodes (25km).

Kolymbia day trips

Several different trips are offered by hotels & tour operators to both Rhodes Town & Lindos. The Rhodes Town by night is a good one. The Lindos trip can be a bit claustrophobic in the heat of day, as the streets are very narrow and full of tourists and vendors alike. Valley of the butterflies is trip that nature lovers or hikers would enjoy, as it's a natural (narrow) trail down the valley for approx 2km, in the shade of the tree canopy (can get quite humid, and good footwear is advisable), with rock pools and man-made woodenn bridges providing a really tranquil or romantic setting for photographs.
There's a cafe, gift shop, & butterfly museum halfway down, and plenty of free parking space at either the top, middle,or bottom of the trail.
Hiring some transport can enable you to visit other places not on the Tour Operators itinery. One of these is Prassionitsi, at the bottom tip of the Island. This is where you can experience the Agean sea on your right and the Med on your left, and watch the scores of wind sports enthusiasts honing their skills.

Kolymbia History and Culture

Kolymbia was a small fishing village until about 6 or 7 years ago, and some of this is still evident around the old natural harbour.
I've always found most of the Rhodos people to be friendly and welcoming, and once they get their toilet plumbing sorted they'll have even more tourists to the Island. Until then, it's still toilet paper in the bin, not down the pan (even in the posh hotels !). There are no high rise hotels here - most are about four storeys at best - which I think is down to local legislation.

Getting to Kolymbia

From Rhodes airport, it's either a taxi across the Island (agree a price with driver before you get in), or a bus ride into Rhodes Town and another bus out towards Lindos. The Resort is about 2km off the main road, and according to the road signs is exactly half way between Rhodes and Lindos (25 km each way).

Getting around Kolymbia

There is a bus service from the resort, but as the public transport here runs on GMT - Greek Maybe Time - it's best not to put total reliance in the system to get you from A to B and back on the same day. Taxi's are always available, but best to agree a price for your journey before you get in. The main ranks in the towns have fixed price rates displayed for certain destinations.
Alterantively, car hire is plentiful, with varying rates dependant on who you choose. Worth shopping around, and whilst the roads aren't too bad it's worth investing in a good road map of the Island (not the tourist one some issue with their cars).

When to visit Kolymbia

Hottest times are around late June to early Sept, when temps get into the high 40c, and the sun burns through most sunshades.
The months before and after (Apr - June, & Sept - Oct) are normally cooler, and when the sun goes down it can get quite chilly (so take a jacket or long sleeved top). As with anywhere, there's always the unexpected heatwave to be had, so just be prepared.
