Kristal: hotel kristal 4 star by Nikki Lee |

we stayed at kristal for 2 weeks, and it was the best holiday we ever had. my husband and our two boys aged 5 and 8 went too. the staff were very polite at all times the cleaners were very thourough too and cleaning was top standard. the food was good even though we ate out a few times.the chinese was delicious and very cheap, less that £20 for us 4!! the swimming pools were very clean and the kids club was very good too. usually about 3 clubs a day including one from 9 till 11pm! the shops are very cheap, and the staff very very friendly. we had two shops less than 5 mins from kristal which were open 24 hour. walking down to the beach which is about 20 mins walk the shops are neverending. next time we visit we will definetley stay at kristal again and take an empty suitcase to fill with all the cheap clothes we can buy. my husband bought a pair of PRADA jeans which cost less than £20!! in our country they would be over £100. the gold shops are very cheap too and the gold is gorgeous too. we also visited the dolphinarium in varna which was good but the dolphins looked poorly treated.it cost 60 leva which is about £20.not bad i suppose for 45 mins show. we also went on the jeep safari which was brill, we stopped off at a few bulgarians houses and was made very welcome.we tried the home made brandy ,honey and bread which was delicious and our last stop was a bbq which was great too. we were serenaded by some people singing and playing instraments.night times you can hear the music from surrounding clubs when your in your hotel room but as soon as you shut your balcony door it is sound proof and the air con is brill!!so it was not a problem. hotel kristal is the place we will go back when we visit bulgaria again.

Kristal: Hotel Kristal 4 star, Golden Sands by Richard Davis 54 |

Hotel is good, nice grounds pool etc, but spoiled by excessive noise from the hotel and surrounding hotels, nightclubs etc. Very good for young families but not not likely to appeal to older couples - surrounding streets have lots of potholes and broken pavements to trip the unwary. Hotel food very good and there were no real problems apart from the noise levels and some mould and damp smell on bedroom ceiling. The holiday was very cheap, however and everything outside (food, clothes, public transport) is extremely cheap! Best deals in Varna, including exchange rates. The First Choice excursions are not really worth the money, in my opinion, and cheaper rates are available locally. Be aware however that these are generally by mini buses of 8-15 seats and not proper touring coaches as found in Cyprus etc. Hiring a car is a bit dubious due to poor driving standards (no entry and stop signs are routinely ignored and vehicles often reverse carelessly without considering pedestrians) and condition of roads (even some major ones) . Personal security must be considered at all times due to pickpockets and I advise using the hotel security boxes and only take out what you need for the day. The Hotel Kristal is rated at 4 star but compares more directly with a 3 star in Spain, Cyprus, Canaries etc. I don't advise using a hotel with less than four stars as some of the others are very(!) basic. A very interesting holiday and certainly worth doing - not like anywhere I've ever been before! Bulgaria might be a bit behind the UK in many ways but there is very little litter and people are generally very helpful, smartly dressed and polite. Not much English spoken so if you have a problem, ask a schoolchild to interpret for you - most of them do 5 yrs English at school and are happy to help.
